Fenix 7 vs. 955 touch handling

Is the touch handling repaired in last FW? Like double tap on map to zoom, long tap on watchface data to enter the widget etc.? Widgets same like on Fenix 7. I'll move from Fenix 7 to 955 because of multi band, but I want same functions as on Fenix 7.

  • Nope... none of all that. Still very mediocre at best

  • Thanks for the answer!

  • The touch handling is still very bad. Sham on you Garmin.

  • Hi Honza, don't know if your decision is still pending. Got my hands on a friends (an only-user-non-tinker) FR955 just yesterday to update it from 12.27 to 13.23 b/o he wanted to have this cool feature of tap on touch to homescreen working too and words were out that it could . With 12.27 this did work only on rare occasions, touch response was mediocre as said bei Flip and in no way comparable to F7/T7. With 13.23 it improved but was still not the same. Quite satisfying only with no screen protector on. Compared to F7/T7: usable but not the same for tap to home you'd need a little luck still. Not the same haptic experience - that being my personal opinion.

  • Can't compare it with a F7 as I don't have it, but with the latest releases (now on 14.08beta) it has improved a LOT...

Touch works fast and fine, finally scrollable graphics on the widgets (for heartrate adn body battery at least). I believe it's still behind the fenix line as that one seems to be way more finished and finetuned, but not many complaints either atm...

  • Hi Erik, I'm still wondering about FR955. Last Friday I visited official Garmin store to try 955 on my hand. The weight is great compared to F7, the size too, it fits better on my smaller wrist, but I was scared of the 955 buttons. It was like cheap crap compared to F7. I think that I can't stand that after using F7 whose buttons are much better but still not perfect. I sent my F7 to repair because of dead black pixel, so I bought FR55 for a while, still in warranty, but the buttons are almost dead. When I get my watch back, I'll send the FR55 for repair too...

So now with latest FWs, is there a possibility to enter e.g. heart rate chart with long tap on heart rate at watchface? For the most I'll like multi band GPS. I tried friend's Amazfit T-Rex 2 and it has excellent GPS compared to basic F7. Many of plastic watch seems has better GPS. This is the main thing on F7 which bothers me.

  • My heartfelt sympathy for the nightmare you're going thru, I really hate it when I not only got problems but then the solution is so unnerving to get.

As for the short cut of functions: I didn't test that so far. Since I prefer to have more information on the face then stock faces can deliver I have a CIQ face and he woludn't even know that there is such a thing since I didn't tell him and uses CIQs for the same reason anyway. I will test that next week when I see him again and give feedback mid of next week.

@FlipStone: thanks a lot for the hopeful outlook, he will like to hear that. He saw me doing this cool gesture which is so intuitive, that it took me only days to adopt after TacDelta w/o touch. Now he had a metoo moment and thus bestowed me with task of finding out more and make it happen. ;-)

Yeah and the buttons...I honestly was taken aback imediatelly when I had his FR955 in my hands first  for initial installation by the buttons. It felt really cheap compared to mine, way more so I'd ever would have thought before. His FR955Solar isn't a bargain either and I'd never have expected this. Probably together with the display that would be a showstopper for me. Allthough I have to say that the F7 buttons of the 4 units I laid hands on so far for testing my GPS problem also felt more wobbly on this regard surprisingly. I always thought, that between Tactix and Fenix there would be only this little almost imperceptible difference in looks and some special features. I stood corrected, ok maybe only with this units, but my TacDelta and now T7 both have a way more defined pressing point and better haptics even apart from the surface of the buttons and are (or have been for the Delta) impeccable in this regard.

With the size and weight of the Garmin: did you try a nylon loop strap? It will lessen that impact considerably. The unit is just nearer on your wrist and is - as for the flex of the strap - not moving around during exercize - even with downhill biking you almost forget that it is there. This I got confirmed by all aquaintances most of which have smaller wrists than me. Maybe that could help your decision. Also you will get  better results out of your HR-Sensor, since the fit is always just right.

As for multiband: There are a lot problems with GNSS around with the F7/T7 at the moment, which I think are identified by now. If I'd be in your place, i'd wait wether they are fixed with the next release. Then I suppose one can live with no multiband Multi GNSS. The problems don't come from multiband or not. I'd never buy a FR955 after what I had in my hands, it is still way to expensive for the haptic. An option would be to do it really cheaper and stay with the FR55. Btw.: If you can buy from Amazon you'd kind of outsource the a RMA process to them. As two friends with F6X and F7 were happy to learn after problems with their units. They just sended them back and got them replaced (one case) or refunded (other case).

  • is there a possibility to enter e.g. heart rate chart with long tap on heart rate at watchface?

Hi Honza, as promised: I tried today and no: with 13.23 on FR955 you won't have touch links from stock WF to functionsnot for HR nor anything else I tested. Tried with 5 different WFs - no success, not even sporadic.

  • No , just from the widgets. Also in 14.08 (still beta yes) the touch functionality and graphs are much better.  You can swipe along the graphs etc. Bit buggy at the mo though, although I am Ok with it.
