Has anyone connected the FR955 to windows using the Garmin USB mode?

All my older Forerunners has been recognized on my Windows notebook as a USB device and got a drive letter assigned. So making a backup of the FIT files, updating the EPO database, etc. was an easy thing. The standard USB mode (aka Garmin mode) is also much faster than the lousy MTP variant.

Now my FR955 does only work in MTP mode, I've checked different cables, different PC's and different Windows versions. Is that a software/firmware bug of the FR955 or is my FR 955 faulty?

  • Is that a software/firmware bug of the FR955 or is my FR 955 faulty?

Neither. The 955 works in MTP mode only on purpose. All garmin devices that have music capability work in MTP mode and do not provide USB mass storage mode.

  • So why there's a menu option to choose between Garmin mode and MTP? BTW the Garmin support told me that it should work and they don't know why it doesn't. Now I should tell them which PC I use and if I can create a video to demonstrate the problem helping to do further investigations.

  • This is the way all Garmins with music have worked since the first one, the fr645m.  You don't see it with a drive letter on windows but it shows up as a device.

With a mac, you need something like Android File Transfer to even see the device.  The support person was wrong

Garmin mode means that there's no data connection to the computer at all. So the choice is MTP or no connection (just charging).

  • Thanks Jim and tmk2

Incredible that the Garmin told me something else and gave me a list of 10 or 12 points to check.
For me it's also a lousy solution, MTP is extremly slow and for me it means a lot of work no to implement this protocol now for doing automatic backups, etc. while charging.
