Nooooo! Spongey button!

The buttons on my 955 felt good when it first arrived, and they have been fine. There seems to be a definite '3-click' rather than just one nice tactile click like on my kids FR45, but I dont mind that too much.

HOWEVER.... The down button has suddenly gone spongey soft, and is missing presses unless I am careful to push it hard all the way in! I had to return my 945 three times for this issue! Anyone finding the same, or am I very unlucky? I will try the care instructions to soak it in mild detergent for a while, but I am now concerned that garmin have FAILED on the buttons AGAIN!  Why cant we have the nice buttons like on other models?! Surely the button and case design isnt unique to the 9x5 series!?

  • Yeah this happened to my 945 all 3 of them, my 745 and my 945LTE. Not surprised it's still happening. The water soak doesn't work

  • The tactile feel of several of mine changed over the course of the first 30-40 days, but now they're all consistent. None of them have the same firm tactile feel of my former F6 Titanium, but they work fine and consistently.

  • i hear your pain. i've been a forerunner user since a 210, then a 735xt, 935, 945LTE, and 955. i don't recall if the 210 buttons annoyed me because i used it purely as a running watch. but since the 735xt, Forerunners have become my 24/7 watches. all of them have exhibited less than perfect buttons. i find it baffling that they haven't figured this out yet. the only thing i can give them credit for as that in spite of inconsistent tactile feel, they have never, up to now, failed to operate for me.

your situation of a failed button like your down button is beyond what i've experienced. i'd set up an RMA and hope you get a better watch.

my 955 has ok buttons as i've noted in a different thread. they have settled into something acceptable for me now that i'm 6+ weeks in of ownership and i am cautiously optimistic they will function as they are for the next 4 years i hope to keep the watch.

  • I've also found that with the touchscreen I rely on the buttons mainly during activities. Most of my menu/glances navigation is done by touch.

  • i'm slowly using the touch screen more and more, especially for glances. yet, muscle memory has me using the buttons more frequently than i probably should since i've used them for the past 6 years on other watches.

  • I've always kept an Apple Watch in rotation, so I'm enjoying the touchscreen upgrade. I find it especially useful when browsing thorough glances, but I keep it turned off during activities.
