Pace Goal Training and Screen

I've only had 955 for a few weeks.
I noticed that this new watch's "pace goal training" screen shows the average pace rounded by 0 or 5 seconds, not rounded at the single seconds as enduro / 245 / ...

For example, if you run at 3:58, it will show 4:00.

If you run at 3:32, it will show 3:35.

Do you think is it a choice to improve personal performance?

  • I think it's always done like this.  It happened with my previous 945 from memory.

I think the idea is to give you an easier way of seeing your general pace without confusing you with too much detail when you quickly glance at your watch.  It's a lot easier to see the difference between 3.55 and 3.60 than something like 3.56 and 3.58.

    Just my guess, anyway.

  • Thank Spiderpig.

I had Enduro since few weeks ago and I'm sure the average pace in the goal pace training wasn't rounder by 0 or 5.
Yes it maybe easiest, but less precise for who wants / needs to training a "perfect" workout.

  • This morning my 955 in a workout with a pace goal 3:50-3:55, reported to me during the run 3:50.

After the phase ended the real average pace was 3:43,8..... 6 seconds of rounding up are not so few!

  • There are some data fields in ConnectIQ that shows pace to the second, you could try experimenting with including one of those into your running screen.

  • I think you can't edit the default workout data screen.

But yes: I'd evaluate using a custom data screen for interval training, instead the default one.

    Thank you!

  • I think it's done because the Sony's chipset was so lousy at keeping the pace correct, it was introduced then.

Now we are again getting better pace from the GPS chipset, maybe that rounding could be removed.

  • I'm evaluation to use the lap screen with: time lap, pace lap, distance lap

  • Unfortunately, the trouble exists and is not related to round to the 5 seconds!

This morning I did an internal training on 1000m with the goal pace 3:54-3:59.
In the latest metres, I received a notification that I was over 4:05... too slow... but the "pace lap" was 3:56 and I finished the lap at 3:56.

I still wrote to Garmin support.

    Stay tuned ;)

  • In these latest 4 months, there was a lot of updates but this bug hasn't been fixed:

    • the notification during a pace goal lap is related to real-time pace, not to the average (goal)
    • the visual controller of the pace isn't strictly related to the average pace
