Problems with two custom maps at once and problems with the Navigation and Maps app

  1. I have loaded two custom maps onto my 955 Solar. One is an OSM map from bbbike.com for routing on the road and the other is a Topo map from TalkyToaster for hiking and trails. In the Map Manager I can see both separately and both seem to be loaded properly. But when I go to the Maps app and try to enable or disable one of them from Maps app settings > Configure Maps as a layer depending on activity, only one or the other is visible. Never both (see screenshots below). This creates problems with routing as both maps are for the same area. How can I make it so that both maps are visible in the Configure Maps setting?

  2. When I navigate to a place from within the Maps app it draws a straight line to that place flying over walls which is not practical. However, when I navigate using the Navigate app it routes a path which can be followed. Is it possible to make the Maps app do the same?

The default maps for my area are extremely poor and no Topo maps exist for my region, so I am forced to use custom maps.

Both Maps appearing in Map Manager

Only OSM appearing in Configure maps

Only TalkyToaster appearing in Configure Maps.

  • I got the same problem. No matter how many maps ive uploaded - always one of them isnt available to set on. But i think it is preactivated, i mean always on. You can check this by turning off all the maps. If you still can see roads etc., its probably because of that one missing map is activated. But unfortunatelly i dont know the reason :f

  • Yes this is true. But only for the Maps activity. In Navigate the one which does not appear is not on by default, I see a blank white screen but with Points of Interest on it for some reason. And Maps activity does not route by road for some reason. But still very annoying bug. Hope Garmin fixes it. As very few people seem to use custom maps and I am afraid this will be forgotten about by Garmin.

  • i am using custom maps since fenix 1 (there was possibility to upload custom small maps). I have favorite very detailed map of my area (muuuuch better than garmin one) which i was using from epix gen1 (and fr945) Unfortunetly it gived me constant crashes on FR955 and had to wipe watch four times because of that (on previous fw). Now i will skip testing on 11.12 because there was nothing in changelog about custom maps. I will wait. Dont have time to set up my watch from the scratch again.

  • Its sad. Thankfully no crashes on my end with 11.12 but I did not have them with 10.10 or 11.11 either. I guess best to wait until a maps fix drops because setting up the watch again is a hassle.

The major reason I got the 955 over the 255 was Maps. Garmin does not provide maps for my region so I have to rely on custom maps. Which is fine. I knew that going in. But maps, the main feature which differentiates the 955 from 255 being so broken is very unacceptable. I pay $200 extra for this feature for it to not work. I hope Garmin fixes this soon. It is a good watch and I like it, but all these bugs do leave a sour taste in my mouth.
