If you start a course part of the way round, or are off-course for too long, the turn-by-turn navigation stops and only distance to end of course appears.

No, I hadn't as I wasn't aware of this forum when I discovered it. I've not been in that situation since.
I don't know whether it's fixed. Since that time I've always been able to start the navigation before reaching the start point, and have never been far enough "off course" for it to get confused.
One thing that does occasionally happen with circular courses is that the "straight line" to the finish point is used instead of the direction to the start point, if you start navigation when you are closer to the finish than the start.
