I'd like to do things such as check the weather forecast during a hike, but I can't figure out the best way to do that sort of thing. Is there a way to do this?

this "bug" was introduced in the 945LTE. i had a long back and forth with Garmin about this happening because with my 935, i was able to hotkey to the watch face and widgets and have the GPS keep running…
Don't leave it on the watch face for long. The GPS pauses when you do, and you'll have a straight line on your trace up to the point where you go back to the activity on the watch.
Configure one hotkey as 'watch face', when then using this during an activity it will bring you to your watchface after which you can use up and down to go through the glances.
Go back to the watchface and press the start button to take you back to the (still running) activity.Just tried this with a walk activity and seems to work fine here

Garmin says there in house 935 did that too which didn't make sense to me. the only thing i could come up with was the fact that i kept my 935 at an earlier firmware (13.30, IIRC) and they changed in subsequently. i crowded sources the 945 and Fenix 6 forums and they mostly suggested that their watches behaved like my 935.
in the end, Garmin stood firm that the GPS stopping logging was acting appropriately and they would consider it a feature request. frustrated me immensely and i've learned to change my behavior of not hot keying out of an activity like i would on my 935 -- usually while hiking or biking to look at something like UV index on the weather widget).
