Issue with turn directions for courses during walks

First time Garmin user here. I created some courses in Garmin Connect on the web and sent them to my 955 via the Connect app. When using them during walks in the residential area where I live using "Do Course" there are two notifications I receive. The first warns me of the upcoming turn and the second is the for the actual turn itself. The upcoming turn notification seems to kick in at what the 955 thinks is a point  approximately 75 feet from the actual turn, but in reality it is much close to 10 to 15 feet from the turn. The actual turn notification usually occurs when I've already completed the turn, which makes no sense. The 955 is configured to use All + Multi-Band and when I look at the tracking of my walk in the app it is highly accurate. Is this to be expected? I'm concerned that if I were to be riding a bike under these same circumstances I would be making a lot of last second turns that might put me at risk.

  • Not sure how it was with the 945 actually but I think I noticed this too.... Was using GPS only mode during a run though so thought it was most likely that. Also, wasn't an issue because with the map and not running as fast as one bikes it was clear enough ;)

Will try my next big run with all on (now gps only to see check battery usage, and gps only is actually good enough 9 out of 10 times for me) but that'll be next sunday.

Will see if I remember to give a smaller testrun a try tomorrow

  • The second tone is confirmation that you've taken the correct turn.

  • Oh? Is this documented somewhere? As I kind of feel that the notifications are just lagging, from my older 9x5 experience.

First one is "up a head" notification and then second is "now turn". The meters in the first doesn't usually match the distance to the turn, they are too much, and then the now turn comes after turning, so I've come to think that they are just lagging.

But this might also be the GPS accuracy issue, but as it's still the case with 955 in the OP, I doubt that. And if it wouldn't be lagging, then the distance should be right in the first notification, which is isn't..

  • I haven't tried navigating with my new 955 yet. My comment is just based on how the tones on the 935/Fenix 6 behaved. Perhaps what you're experiencing is something different though.

  • I haven't even got my 955 yet, so my comments are based on the 9x5 experience and I haven't gotten any feeling that the second is "confirmation", why would it show the instruction to turn again, if it would be confirming, nice job! Shouldn't it show some correct symbol in the second then? And if you go wrong, I think you still get it and then finally you just get off course.

  • Agreed that it doesn't make sense that the second notification would be a confirmation, but since I couldn't find anything about the notifications in the documentation I can't say with 100% certainty what they mean. Before getting the 955 I was using Ride with GPS on my iPhone XS Max for my turn-by-turn directions. It did a very good job of giving me a voice notification of an upcoming turn, and the GPS capabilities on this approximately four year old model are obviously not as good as the 955.

  • Hello, could someone show me how to set up the turn by turn for the Forerunner955 Solar?
