I ordered a new FR 955 ,but everyone is complaining about!

ordered a new FR 955 ,but everyone is complaining about, I'm wondering if someone have something nice to say about the watch. I'm almost regretting the buy only seeing all the complains in this forum

  • i'll bite ;)

first, have you owned a Garmin watch before?

i ask because if you have and have bought a new model at or near release date, you will have likely been on the bleeding edge of technology. many of us (for me, the 935 and 945LTE in recent years) have experienced a lot of bugs/inconsistencies/frustrating behavior in newly released watches that sometimes can take months to get resolved. some get resolved sooner, but this is just a realistic glass of water for you.

that being said, that hasn't stopped me from being an early adopter because well, i'm a gadget geek and am willing to put up with some of these growing pains of being on the bleeding edge.

finally, before i say something nice as you ask, i'll say that most of the time, these forums are to talk about "problems," not spend time praising a product.

but, to finish on a good note, here are some positives:

    - i like the larger screen relative to the prior generation 9XX forerunner watches. for my 53 year old eyes, that extra 0.1" is noticeable in readability

    - i like the potential that the Solar offers yet i will remain skeptical until i see some benefits in real life -- i hope i'll see it when i backpack alter this summer.

    - the new GPS chip with multi band is all that people have claimed it to be (from Fenix7/Epix2 experiences): fast lock, excellent path accuracy, and in my limited experience, better (still not perfect) instantaneous pace.

    - they dropped the price for this generation of watches ($500 vs $600 for the 945)

    - ability to configure the watch using a mobile Connect app.

  • I think Training Readiness will be fun!

  • Ha! I got you beat. I’m at 7.

  • Yeah, I agree with this.  People on the internet generally have things they want to complain about or point out problems.  I'm not seeing anything that makes this watch unusable.  This is the same with pretty much any new product - you Google for people's views on it and you invariably find people finding negatives - it's the nature of the internet.

There's been a few YouTubes about the 955 and they're largely positive.  I'm looking forward to a smoother pace trace for my 5k runs.

  • 24 hours into ownership of the 955, and I'm pleased with it so far.

I also bought the 945 shortly after release, and had to return the first one within 2 days because of a fault with the display.

The buttons on the 955 feel much better than the ones on my 2nd 945 that I got a a replacement, and even then, the initial firmware updates that came out caused a few issues and bugs, but they were quickly fixed, and certainly didn't make it unusable for my use case (95% running, 5% cycle).

  • Three days into ownership and I'm pretty happy (coming from a 935). I briefly had a Base Fenix 7 but returned it as the 955 had more memory, better GPS, was cheaper and more comfortable.

There are a few features the Fenix 7 have which I hope get ported to the 955:

This is a Garmin product so it's bound to have bugs at this stage. However, I've not come across any show stoppers yet.

Looking forward to testing the GPS accuracy in an open water swim this evening (the 935 wasn't very good at this)

I am generally pleased with mine - some bugs/hiccups for sure, but I anticipate that with any new release. Overall, it's a very worthy upgrade from my FR745.

  • I have had nearly every significant Forerunner since the first 201 in 2004.

So far the 955 has compared to other devices

    (a) Best GPS tracks by a long way with Multi Band

    (b) Fastest processor

    (c) No crashes yet

    (d) "Basic" functions work fine

    (e) Firstbeat stuff largely makes sense.

  • I've come over from Fitbit after months of issues with the versa 3 and a joke for support I took the plunge with a fr955 which before I chose it would have been a Venu 2p. I miss the Alexa smart assistant (when it worked), but I'm in a current wow mode, battery is a lot better. Tons of stats of which most mean nothing till I sit down and learn about them and GPS is more accurate on the same 5km course I did yesterday with a crapbit. Hoping Garmin looks after me well as I don't want to end up having to move again.

Is there a guide anywhere to all the features etc and reading the data as I want to delve deeper and get a better understanding.

Thanks in advance and hello Garmin users.

  • DCRainmaker does an in depth review of it, including a YouTube video which is worth a watch.

Pleased with mine, coming from a 945. First thing I noticed was how much better the buttons feel. Lots of little positives for me, which added together make it a worthwhile upgrade (not to mention how much cheaper it is than the 945 was on release).
