Watch Resets On Button Press/Screen Touch

After update to latest software, my forerunner has decided to restart on any button press or screen touch. I've currently got it updating Maps via PC but has anyone run into this? I'm going to try to resetting it via Garmin Express as well, but thought I'd throw this thread out there in case others run into this issue.

Edit #1 - Updated Maps, and it restarted without wiping it clean. Appeared to work. 5 minutes later. Same issue. I then put it back on the computer and was able to reset the watch, wiped it clean, repaired it. Will update again. Kind of frustrating, but I know this stuff happens. Wife has a white 955 hasn't installed the update yet, but she had a run this morning and it worked fine.

  • Same issue here. Went for a factory reset. Couldn't get there with buttons, and it crashed when I tried to use the menu, but by triggering the maps menu using my phone I managed to get into system and do a reset. Now seems to be working OK.

  • Glad it worked for you too. It's been solid ever since this issue. Fingers crossed.

  • I am now getting constant resets, I cannot access the reset menu on the watch as the watch just reboots! How do you do it via Garmin Express? I am not clear using the Map menu method. Any help appreciated. Thanks

  • Do you have your phone linked? I used the mobile app, tap on the 955 icon at the top and choose "Map" from the settings screen that appears. Then "Map Manager", "TopoActive Maps", "Add Map". The watch then goes into finding wifi and shows a map selection menu.
From there I was able to hold the "up" button to get the settings menu without it crashing, scroll down to "System", then "Reset" and "Delete Data and Reset Settings".
Since then things have been fine.

Clearly this plan is only guaranteed to work if you have your phone set up before you update the firmware! (though I guess it might be possible to add the phone after). There's supposed to be a button-press way of doing a reset; I managed to get into Test Mode but couldn't find a button sequence that would do it. I don't use Garmin Express on the PC but it sounds like there might be a method using that too.

For reference, my watch came with Firmware 9.14 and the update was to 10.10, fairly rapidly after setting things up. The crashes/resets happened instantly on any button press or screen touch.

  • Perfect thanks. Garmin Express doesn't seem to have a reset option. The map method works, but this seems a little crazy! I also went from 9.14 to 10.10 and the crashes started soon after.

  • There's no actual reset option from Express - Garmin add a feature request to the long list!

When I unplugged the watch I was able to button press for a few minutes. This allowed me to access the same reset menu that mentioned previously.

  • It's not crazy. Software updates sometimes cause issues. Seems pretty limited and I wonder if it's related to previous watches or something specific in our profiles that doesn't like the software update from 9.14 to 10.10.

    I had a 935 previously. You guys?

  • I've just come from a Fenix 5x, I also have a 1030 plus for cycling and a Fenix 3HR for swimming. I wondered if it was something to do with what options I'd set up, but I couldn't think of anything weird. I was on the default watchface and hadn't installed anything from CIQ. I'd tweaked the "glances" list a bit, set up my phone. Hadn't recorded any activities.

  • Yes! i had this too. But i linked it with my custom maps which i use for years on other garmins. Now i am afraid to install them because i dont want to 5th time configuring everything.

Now i have everything stock but watchface and for now it is stable.

I had to use unprompted reset from:

    support.garmin.com/.../

    Unprompted Reset

    1. Ensure the watch is powered off.2
    2. Press and hold the Down, Start, and Back buttons.
    3. Power the watch on while holding these buttons.
    4. After the first beep release the Start button.
    5. After the second beep release the remaining buttons.

The watch should now be reset.

  • Thanks - that's the reset I was looking for! I was going for the hold "back" whilst turning it on which seemed to do nothing (I also tried with the other buttons which is how I ended up in test mode).

If it helps, I've now installed four custom maps (KMZ) to my device with no issues other than two of them initially not appearing until they were given shorter filenames.
