Is Garmin ever going to get the Forerunner buttons consistently tactile?

So: very subjective survey for those of you who are on the bleeding edge with me and have recently gotten a 955: how are your buttons?

mine are ok. i'll give them a "B." not mushy, but not a smooth simple click like i had on my 935. my first 945LTE was awful...one mushy button, another one that triple clicked (for lack of better description), another one that double clicked, 2 that felt great. my 2nd 945LTE was better...probably a B+/A- .... 3 out of 5 buttons excellent, 2 good.

my 955 Solar: an inconsistent mix of button feel. nothing awful but certainly my complaint lives on with all of the 900 watches i've used in the past 5+ years...not consistent and not what i would hope for in a $600 watch.

but i probably won't complain/exchange unless i hear regularly that people are getting excellent units. i'm just surprised after all these years, Garmin hasn't improved in this area.

i guess regardless of feel, they work so that's what they would say is important.

  • Have solar version and buttons are so-so. Sometimes (seldom but nevertheless) they misfire but mostly I don't like the feel. It's feels like it goes through 2-3 stages when you press them. And periodically there's a metallic click in the process, like if the spring is misaligned or smth.

Was enjoying 945 for two years before and those were top-notch! The whole package worked like a charm. 955 surprisingly seem to be a bit "beta" both in software and hardware departments.

  • I had the same experience as you. Then I got my solar replaced with a new solar and that watch is much more similar to the 945 I had. So I can just encourage you to reach out to garmin.

  • Can be a bit tricky thing to do in my case but nice to know it's not just the model "feature", thanks!

  • Are you sure 945 was good?

I had the 945 for 3 years. Buttons worked but they didn't feel good to me.

Go to the 945 section, I'm sure you can find negative feedback on the buttons too.

  • I still have my 945 and yes, when compared side by side 945 I'd as flawless as it feels.

On 955 on all but one buttons I have shutter-like feeling. Which is not consistent. Sometimes it disappears, sometimes there's additional "stage" appears. It's probably due to that from time to time they misfire - I suspect I mistake that middle click for the real one.

"Stickiness" is not really an issue for me, although I do feel it occasionally.

Probably I was really lucky with 945 or just less so with 955.

It doesn't really feel like it's a valid reason for warranty claim yet but I'll keep watching it closely.

  • Have you bought your watch from official store? Or from authorized dealer but speaked with Garmin Official? And it was RMA or regular return? Ive bought from authorized distibutor in my country (Poland) and dont think there are possibility to send that buttons for RMA, especially get first new watch, before sending old one...

  • Simply same experience with my 955 Solar that I got last week, all three on left double click ( no good) and two on right single click ( good) So does it mean Garmin hasn't fixed the issue yet or I got the old one? I will call Garmin and find it out tomorrow, thank you

  • Don't lose faith, the middle button in my 955 had lost most of its "response" recently and...now it's back ! Now I did give it some repeated hard push action when I noticed that but it didn't seem to do much good at the time. One thing is certain these buttons are not very consistent over time !

  • Bought it through a authorised dealership (XXL). But contracted garmin directly through their support email. I think I provided only the serial number on the watch. Not sure about the receipt.

they default organised it thus that I needed to send in my current watch before I got a new, but when I reached out again to them about it, they said it was fully possible to charge my credit card between transfer, so I got a new watch first and then returning the second.

so I had to go through a bit of an effort to get it like I wanted. I am still very happy with the replacement which hasn’t had any issues so far.

  • Mine buttons are buttons.

    When pressed, they function.

    So for me it's good
