Is Garmin ever going to get the Forerunner buttons consistently tactile?

So: very subjective survey for those of you who are on the bleeding edge with me and have recently gotten a 955: how are your buttons?

mine are ok. i'll give them a "B." not mushy, but not a smooth simple click like i had on my 935. my first 945LTE was awful...one mushy button, another one that triple clicked (for lack of better description), another one that double clicked, 2 that felt great. my 2nd 945LTE was better...probably a B+/A- .... 3 out of 5 buttons excellent, 2 good.

my 955 Solar: an inconsistent mix of button feel. nothing awful but certainly my complaint lives on with all of the 900 watches i've used in the past 5+ years...not consistent and not what i would hope for in a $600 watch.

but i probably won't complain/exchange unless i hear regularly that people are getting excellent units. i'm just surprised after all these years, Garmin hasn't improved in this area.

i guess regardless of feel, they work so that's what they would say is important.

  • Good to read that I'm not going draft crazy, i have the same "double click" in at least three buttons on my 955 solar.. it's pretty annoying for a 600 eur watch Rolling eyes

  • I've had multiple 935's and 945's and now the 955 and the buttons are really hit and miss.

I love the feel of the click but after lots of pool swimming it soon goes away and then you just forget about it. Until you RMA and realise what you've been missing.

    955 is nothing different unfortunately

  • Dumb question here, but what are the buttons supposed to feel like? My 945 has very soft buttons, with no click and very little travel. My new 955 has definite clicks and travel when pressing the buttons. Which one of these is acting the way it's supposed to?

  • I would say no one knows :D But they should be feel consistent :D I would have guessed that 945 was so expensive swap for them that they would have used some money for new button design and solved the issue, but no :(

  • I think the buttons feeling is a bit subjective. Your mileage may differ from others.

For a non watch person like me (only 955 and 945 for past 3+ years), I feel the buttons are acceptable.

How are the buttons compared to other watches?

  • just bought a 955 solar direct from garmin, all the buttons on the left side of the watch "double click" like a camera shutter button

  • Hi, EMEA Forerunner 955 onwer here. Just received a new unit from Garmin and it has worse button feedback than the one returned. The first unit has the shutter like button feedback only on the start button (top right). Now 4 of 5 buttons have the same problem..

  • All of my buttons had audible double click at the beginning. They changed slightly after using...

However now two of my buttons get stuck in the middle position occasionally. Then there is no audible click at all.

Now I wonder if returning this fixes anything? Maybe I have to feel other 955 models in stores before sending back, maybe Garmin has flawed batch that people keep getting?

  • That's typical of all the Forerunners after the 235 and of Fenix watches since the 5, clicky at first and then...it's random!  If the buttons work I wouldn't worry about it.

You can get the clickiness back by giving a few strong button pushes...

  • Garmin offered to trade in my Rev A edition for a new. Once i got it, i saw it was a rev b, and i can confirm that this edition does not have mushy buttons. I am very glad i did this.

Garmin originally offered that i sent my watch in, and then get a return (leaving me without a watch for 7+ days), after reading suggestions here, i asked if i could get a new watch first, and then sending my watch in return but holding cash as a deposit. They complied and here i sit today with a better watch from day one.

Just wanted to share this, since i was inspired by what i had read here, in case others are having doubts.
