New FR 955 - Buy now or wait?

It's been 3 years since I bought my 945 and I was anxiously waiting for the 955.  Well, it's finally been released and after reading DCRainmaker's review and comparing the features of the 955 and 945 on Garmin's website, I think I'm going to wait.  The multi-frequency positioning system is the only thing I may be interested in because I've really had no GPS problems with my 945.  The software features are just more add-on goodies I really don't need.  I have no interest in solar or the new Elevate 4 HR sensor as I use a chest strap on all my workouts anyway.  Speaking of chest straps, the website shows the HRM-Pro, Swim and Tri compatible with storing data on the 945 and just list the Pro and Swim with the 955.  Is it an oversight, or would I have to replace my trusted Tri?  Anyway, just curious on your thoughts?

  • DC also mentions that 945LTE will be getting firmware updates though no mention of 945. would be great to understand when and what updates the 945 is getting.

  • Might pick up the 955 non-solar if I see it on sale down the line... otherwise will just stick with the 945 for the time being.

  • I think I will wait. I have been using 945 since its early days. After a year, Garmin replaced the first item due to issues with barometric sensor. Beside that its hardwear proved to be reliable. After many sw upgrades altimeter works just fine, finally, and this is the main feature I am interested in. Additional apps in 955 look really cool and I can see their utility in my training programme, however, 945 is a beast which proved itself, works just perfect and still meets my expectations. Also, I suppose that 945 will receive some, ofc not all, features designed for 955. If I am correct, it'd be cool, if I am wrong, that's OK :)

  • 3 year 945 user and ordered the 955 solar...

    Main reasons:

    * (Slightly) larger screen/smaller bezel

    * Improved hardware (ohr, gps, processing power... the latter mainly wrt maps)

    * Touchscreen, again mainly wrt maps

First wanted to go for the non-solar, but solar grew on me and well... was available.

  • Not surprising at all from a business perspectivie

  • how do you rate the indoor screen visibility of the 955 solar compared with the 945 and 935? (i believe you were a 935 user too?)

i just pulled the trigger on the 955 solar (won't be coming for at least week though). i'm hoping that the solar layer isn't a huge compromise for screen visibility. i think using the extra bezel for a bit extra battery endurance will be nice if it doesn't detract from the functionality of the watch indoors. (i don't mind a little less clarity, but i don't want to have to turn on the backlight when i want to steal a look at the time or basic metrics (HR, Body Battery) at a glance.

I'm curious why you were anxiously waiting for the 955, if nothing the 955 added is of any interest to you - what were you hoping they would add, that they didn't add?

  • In the comment section of one of DC Rainmaker’s reviews I remember him saying the issue was on the Stryd side, not Garmin. Apparently they created a standard Stryd could use, but Stryd decided not to adopt it for whatever reason.

If you’re interested, perhaps have a search through probably the 955 in-depth review.

  • I do enjoy new gadgets but after having issues with my 945 (first batch)

Well, it's usual that first batch has recall so you can get two new watches for the price of one ;)

  • what were you hoping they would add, that they didn't add?

I was hoping to see an AMOLED screen and/or LTE version.
