[920XT] Random Restart Issue with Forerunner 920XT Watches (version 10.20) started (26/05/2024)

Hello,

I am experiencing problems with my two Forerunner 920XT sports watches (version 10.20).

The issues are as follows:

  1. Random Restarts: The watches restart randomly, especially when I think they are trying to connect to the Garmin cloud.
  2. Startup Freeze: After restarting, they always get stuck on the startup screen with the Garmin logo.
  3. Reboot Cycle: The screen stays on the Garmin logo for a few seconds, then turns off and restarts again, repeating this cycle indefinitely.

To try to resolve this issue, I manually restart the watches by holding the power button for 15 seconds. Then, upon restarting, I press both right buttons until the first beep, and then only the bottom right button until the second beep to reset the watch. Despite this, the issues persist.

I noticed these problems after the latest update to the Garmin app on iOS, but I am not sure if it's related. Here are the tests I conducted:

  • Connection to Garmin app on iOS: Once paired, the watch performs an "update" (I had time to check in the system and it's already in 10.20 so not a software update) and then goes into the perpetual reboot cycle. I am not sure if this update is an OS update or just configuration files.
  • Connection to Garmin app on Android: Once paired, the watch performs an update and then goes into the perpetual reboot cycle.
  • Connection to the cloud via Wi-Fi: The watch performs an update and then goes into the perpetual reboot cycle.
  • Connection via Garmin Express on PC: No issues. I can send data and workouts. I even completed a workout and uploaded it to the cloud via Garmin Express.

I was considering staying in this mode via Garmin Express temporarily while trying to identify the source of the problem, which based on these cross-tests, could be related to Garmin Connect. However, my watch just restarted without being connected, and I had to perform the reset again.

I am aware that the Forerunner 920XT is no longer supported, but I would like to keep using it. I just love that old and efficient watch. Are there any diagnostic tools available to me? I would also like to test reverting to version 9.X if possible to conduct more testing.

I'm sure I'm not the only one having problems since I had poroblems with my 2 watches, but a quick search on internet does not lead to any other person having the same issue (recently).

Thank you in advance for your help.

I am posting this on a forum dedicated to newer watches, knowing that this issue concerns an older model that is no longer supported, but I would like to keep using it.
