Just wanted to check if anyone has had success in getting Lactate Threshold readings since the last update in July? I don’t think it’s a max HR issue as I clocked my max 195 bpm in a recent session and tried lowering it to 190 bpm with no luck.

No one experiencing the same? This is really annoying me, looks like it was a previous issue on 955 which has been resolved. I’ve tried resetting zones, auto detection etc but nothing is working. I’m sure the guided test might work as it did with the 955, but the point is that I want the auto detection to work as part of my standard sessions.
I unexpectedly got my first lactate heart rate and pace reading since July yesterday. The only thing I can attribute it to is managing to spend more time spent initially in Zone 1 and 2 before Zone 4-5, which for us amateurs can be pretty hard to achieve!
Also could be due to me previously resetting to default Garmin lactate zones and auto max heart rate which is set to 185. That doesn’t feel ideal as I’ve achieved max HR of 195 not too long ago.
Im pretty sure the feature still needs some attention and optimisation though!
I always get a lactate treshold update after spending about 4 to 5 minutes in zones 2 and 3 and about the same in upper zone 4 and lower zone 5.
Usually I go on a track, run about 1 km at easy pace and then about 1 km while pushing hard. You can also get an update by going hard first and then slowing down afterwards.
I believe spending some time in zone 3 and at the top of zone 4 is the most important to trigger an update. Almost always works for me without fail.
I'm doing Garmin coach training since 12 weeks already with multiple reps like 5mins at race pace and my lactate threshold is not updated since January 2023 :)
As a purely recreational runner, most of my runs sadly go quickly to Zone 3-5 with little effort! I think all zones need to be achieved but zones 1-2 being the ones skipped by many during regular sessions.
Just to be clear I'm not implying that it's working on all watches. I'm merely describing how I manage to trigger a lactate treshold update automatically using a rather quick progression run.
If your HRM is working correctly and you stay in zone 2/3 and upper zone 4/lower zone 5 for about 5 minutes each then there's probably some kind of software problem with your watch.
You could try the guided test to check if your zones are set correctly. And I assume no updates are shown in Garmin Connect either?
I manage to trigger an update by staying about a minute in zone 2 and about 3 to 4 more in zone 3 before pushing hard. I'm fairly certain that time in zone 1 isn't necessary because I usually warm up before attempting to trigger an update.
Maybe the guided test is the best way to go about it to hit the necessary criteria if a progression run doesn't trigger an automatic update.
I agree. It’s only now that my fitness has enabled me to manage a relatively acceptable and sustainable Zone 2 running pace (134-149). I previously refused to walk this zone so ended up in Zone 3+ very quickly!
What do you think is the importance of Max HR value in the Threshold values given? I manage to achieve 190-195 during hard intervals, however after I reseted the zones, auto detect has now placed max HR at 185.
