Open Water Tracking Really Bad

I understand that sometimes it's best practice to let your GPS lock green for a couple minutes before starting any activity. This time I let it lock green for a good few minutes whilst standing in one part and still the activity tracking was complete rubbish. Almost every open water swimming activity of mine is so far off and yet I see friend's who use other devices such as apple watch or Coros to have much better tracking.

Is my device faulty? Sometimes my run activities have surprisingly bad tracking too but open water is by far the worst.

Is there anything that can be done here? I expected so much better from one of Garmins top of the range watches.

  • Garmins top of the range watches.

Well, it was top of the range 4 years ago. Although, I'm not sure the 965 is much better at tracking OWS activities.

  • thats not my experience with the FR945

I swim in the harbour 6 days a week and its spot on with the detail. GPS + GLONASS

when I stop I make sure to pause and keep my watch hand above the water line

look some days it can be less than perfect but the vast majority is great
