Training Status in Garmin Connect with EDGE 840

Hello, after adding EDGE 840 to Garmin connect I have no more access to Training Status from 945, it's substituted with status from 840. But 945 is set as main device.

TrueUp is active on both devices. To update current status I have to switch on EDGE everyday.

Is it possible to fix that?

You have the option to set your Forerunner as your Primary Wearable and your Primary Training Device (PTD). It sounds like you need to double check which device is your PTD. Please see Garmin Connect: Setting Your Primary Training Device.

For more information on Unified Training, please also see What is Unified Training Status?

That should be the reason. But I do not have such a button as described:

My Manage Device Priority is empty. And mobile Connect app also didn't provide me with this option.

Here is a quote from support center (first link):

If you do not see a Primary Training Device selector in Garmin Connect, this means that you do not have at least two devices compatible with the Primary Training Device setting. If you have only one compatible device, it is set by default as your Primary Training Device and no selector will show.

If you use two devices, one compatible with PTD setting and one not compatible, ensure that you have designated the device with the most advanced performance metrics as your PTD and sync that device often. This ensures that your PTD device and Garmin Connect have the most up to date activity and Training Status data. If you have both a PTD and Non-PTD, it is expected that the non-PTD capable device's performance metrics may not match exactly what is calculated by the PTD capable device. Devices that do not support Training Status cannot be set as a PTD, for a list of devices with Training Status see - What Is the Training Status Feature on My Garmin Device?.

So... this article from your first link direct me to this list:

List of Compatible with Trainig Status Cycling Computers and Watches which contains 945, but your second link have:

List of Cycling Computers and Watches With Unified Training Status which doesn't contain 945.

Am I understand right, that by adding the new bike computer to my connect account, I have no longer access to some of the functions from my watch? Such as Training Status and Training Load. I'm using my 945 since january 2022 and 945s are still availiable to order at garmin.com Is it too old now for normal operation? Is it still possible to fix that? Besides buying 955/F7

  • May I have permission to view your Connect account, so I can check a few details?

  • Dima, keep us updated on outcome.  I was hoping to finally get an Edge 840 or 540 this summer, but if the 945 is causing all sorts of training status issues, not sure I need to jump in yet since 945 does mostly what I need for cycling (power meter and mapping sort of )

  • The link that I provided doesn't show the 945 because it's not compatible with Unified Training. This does not mean that you will no longer receive data from your 945. Unified Training allows users to view their training data more seamlessly, and gives the user a better idea of their overall fitness level.

I know it can be a little confusing, so here's my recommendation for your situation: After performing a run activity on your watch, upload the run to Garmin Connect like normal. Then, sync your Edge to Garmin Connect. The Edge will compute the new Training Status. The next time you sync the watch with Garmin Connect, it will reflect the new Unified Training Status.

Reviewing this section from the FAQ that I shared may also help:

What if I have a Device With Unified Training Status and One Without?

"The Device Compatible with Unified Training Status with act as the PTD by default. The device without Unified Training Status will still generate its own Training Status that will be visible on the device itself, but the Training Status on the PTD and in Garmin Connect will be the true Training Status. You will no longer see the option to toggle between different device's Training Status in Garmin Connect if a PTD is set on the account."

  • My main concern was about switching on EDGE 840 every time I need a Training Load graph. Because at Zwift season (someone call it winter) I expect not to use EDGE 840 for some weeks or even a month. And I checking my Load preaty often.

After few days of beholding Training Load graph without sync with EDGE 840 I can say that the main graph still updating from 945. Chronic Load, Load Ratio and green background of optimal zone didn't update without EDGE, but 945 can add new dots to the graph by itself. After sync with EDGE, values slightly changed. I think that is acceptable.

    Thank you for information!

  • Hello, I have an update.

Today I switched on my EDGE 840 for a ride, after more than a month living without it. All this time I was running with my 945 and training indoor with Tacx Neo 2 SE. My watch calculated Training Load for me absolutely normally.

But today after syncing with the EDGE 840 all Load data for last 3 weeks is gone. Its only add one point for today. Thats make it unuseable...

  • Can't you switch device in the device dropdown at the top or was that removed when you added the 840?

Also make sure you let the Edge download all data and upload the new calculated data before you start a ride. That way it will use the same data as the 945.

  • This selection menu was availiable for me when I had EDGE 530, but with 840 its not. I think 840 is forced to be a main training device because of superiorior algorithms inside.

I sync all data possible before the ride. I think the problem is in a limit of activities for TrueUp sync:

As you can see here, EDGE 840 calculated Chronic Load only for last 24 days, but I didn't switch it on for 31 days. That gives a one week gap in data that 840 got. Probably that made an error in his calculations. But it shouldn't, I hope it will be fixed.
