Training effect broken does not match heart rate zones anymore with firmware 12.10

I've been running with the Garmin Forerunner 945 for a few years now. Love the suggested workouts feature because it brings a lot of variation to my runs. The last few months however all of my base runs in zone 2 have been rated as tempo runs as a training effect. This results in an "High Aerobic" training status with only workout suggestions for base runs and sprints. I already tried to reset my heart rate zones but that only resulted in lower heart rate zones with the effect that base runs are impossible to run. Determining the training effect based on heart rate zones should be pretty straight forward, zone 2 is base and zone 3 is tempo. Also once the training effect has been determined there is no way to correct it so I'm stuck in a "High Aerobic" training status. This way training with the Garmin 945 is pretty much useless so is this a known issue and how can this be resolved ?

  • And after a strong interval training it put the max HR up to 188.

Turn the auto-detection for HR Max off and do a field test to determine your HR Max. You can also complete a maximal but steady…

  • I have the exact same issue. It's ongoing already for multiple weeks. Zone 2 runs are logged as tempo and today even as threshold where 96% was in zone 1/2 and only 2% in zone 3.

Also had a time frame after I had ran a marathon that the zones heart rate bandwidth was all over the place (I have it on automatic adjustment).

It's driving me crazy..... Hope someone has a solution.

  • Do you have a HR zone or dial/graph screen on your activity?   What does it say when running?

If you go to the menu of watch and select 'Profile' and then 'Heart Rate' and then 'Sport Heart Rate' does the maximum HR there for running say the same as your online profile?  Does the Heart Rate Zones settings look the same as well?

I would change them online by like 1bpm and sync... see if they update... then change back to make sure good values are in there.

Also have you done a hard reset since you updated firmware?  Might be worth a shot

  • Thank you for your suggestions but sadly I already did a hard reset of my watch (twice) and the issue remains. Before this I have reset my heart rate zones but this made things only worse.

Already compared the maximum HR and zones on my watch to the settings in Garmin Connect and they are exactly the same. I'm not using the 'Sport Heart Rate' so I'm pretty sure that's alright.

Today the heart rate for the Today's Workout Suggestion (Base) had a heart rate target type which is already lower than my minimal heart rate for zone 2.

Your first suggestion I will try on my next run but I'm afraid it will show me running almost 100% of the time in zone 2.

@Garmin... If there's someone who knows how to solve this problem, please respond.

  • Checked the hear rate zone settings but they are in sync with the personal profile. During running the heart rate zone is also indicated correctly. Today ran a zone 2 run of 13km. Only 1 percent of the run barely touched zone 3. And again it incorrectly logged the primary benefit saying it was a tempo run. Very frustrating. Come on @Garmin.... Give us an answer.

  • It appears to be getting worse. Had a basic run but was logged as threshold. This is really getting annoying because now I have an aerobic high and my base is running empty.

  • Same here, tempo seems to be the only possible the training effect for my runs. The last few weeks I've only been running in zone 2 so I'm curious what will happen when I schedule an actual tempo run. Not a big surprise the last runs are marked as unproductive and there seems to be low aerobic shortage.

Below you'll find the things I've tried to resolve the problem but it still persists:

    1. Reset of my heart rate zones
    2. Reset of my watch
    3. Created Sport Heart Rate zones for running
    4. Enrolled in the beta channel but the problem remains in the 12.53 beta firmware

Having enrolled in the beta program should allow me to report this issue through that channel.

  • Now I only get Basic as a primary benefit when running purely in Zone 1. Runs in Zone 2 are logged as tempo and even threshold.

  • I saw your name in the FR255 forum. Could you also look at this for the FR 945? The exact same thing that was on the 255 and 955 is now also for 2 months or so happening on the 945.

  • Hmm, I have been keeping an eye on this since you posted, sometimes the zones and score can be maybe questionable... but I haven't seen real issues.  I get base, reccovery, tempo, threshold... all seem to correlate with the effort/HR.  sometimes shifted by one zone, but all within reason.  Run and Bike (iin and outside)  so must be a per watch or settings based issue
