Like it says… Now nothing that happens while I’m holding the rails registers as running. So when I’m doing hill intervals the hardest parts aren’t counting. I’m not thrilled.

It can't measure that you are running if the watch isn't moving. That is just impossible.

Well, that wasn't the case before, actually. Which is to say, that running on this treadmill I have always registered distance. Now it doesn't register when I'm holding the sides - towards the end of an interval.

I work in a metrology lab -> I assure you that it's moving when I'm holding the sides.
I don't have enough data from the treadmill to be able to see the difference in behaviors in the graphs. However, as I have not calibrated my treadmill running I can say with certainty that before the watch always showed more running than the treadmill. Now the treadmill shows more.
Is the watch moving when you are holding the sides? That is the only thing that matters for measuring the distance.
When you are changing how you are running on the treadmill the distance will be more off. Doing intervals, changing the incline etc. will make the distance more incorrect.
Are you also running outdoors with GPS? If you do that the calibration of the watch will change and it will be more accurate indoors.
I did 1 hour on the treadmill this morning and it worked perfectly across all metrics. Like e7andy said if the watch isn’t swinging with a stride then it’s statistically impossible for it to measure anything remotely like a sensible pace or cadence. Now pairing with a Running Dynamics pod would be different.
What’s more likely to have happened is that the calibration has been thrown off or reset which means it’s not tracking as well as it was before. Choose the recalibrate and save option once you stop the workout. I recalibrate often depending on my workout as my stride and cadence will change depending on my pace which means the values won’t track as accurately.
