Average Pace v fr 235

Just taken delivery of a 945 and on the first flight test the average pace and distance seemed to be all over the place so much so I thought I had the watch set in KM rather than miles.

Went out on a walk this morning and with both the 945 and my old 235, and while the net results were similar the average pace on the 945 was changing so rapidly that it almost felt like current pace.  The pace priofile on connect seems much more detailed as well.

Is there a different sample rate on the 945 than the 235??

Thanks

**Edited to correct the 945/745 typo

  • Please ask on the 745 threat this is for the 945

  • Yes, I tried to repost my message......it is for the 945, I put 745 in error

  • A couple things in the post confused me.  To clarify - you have "Average Pace" displayed on the screen for your run and walk activities? It isn't just the typical "Pace" (current / Live / "instant") or Lap Pace?   Because I don't know why changing to KM vs miles would help.  If it was autolap at 1mi vs 1km (.62mi) then Lap Pace does get effected.  Hence when I do strong tempo workouts, I setup workouts with recurring 1/2mile intervals, so that my laps and lap paces are recorded every ~3minutes....easier to gauge pace and steadyness and look back after as well.

if you really are using 'average' ... it should be just that... avg over the run... so the first 5-10minutes it might go up/down a bit.  (are your individual km/mi autolaps recording pretty steady times?)   Especially if you are slowly increasing speed during warmup, or finding your groove.  but yeah should be smooth after that assuming you are holding a steady lap pace.  never used avg pace... kind of a not helpful metric.  (similar to avg HR)... unless your goal of the run is super steady and not doing a warmup/cooldown jog of any kind.  its whats in the middle (lap pace / HR) that is the data that matters usueally, I have found 945 to record pretty good GPS.

One other helpful tip is a "gps soak" , standing outside after 'gps ready' for an extra 20-60+seconds to really get full GPS lock of all available.  Also I like to wait to hit the start until running down road ~10sec (helps get start pace set well, and gets HR up a little bit (helps w/graph Yaxis range lol).

  • Due to my poor eyesight I always run with Distance and Average Pace on my main screen, I can only cope with 2 fields displayed at a time. I have average pace displayed because I pace a lot and I use average pace specifically for this. The 235 changes as I run as you say but eventually steadies, I didn't find this to be the case with the 945, it was changing alot, more than I would expect (bearing in mind I use it all the time), the walk was purely testing my new watch and my tried and tested 235 side by side. Thanks for your tips though, I'm pacing saturday so will try it in anger and hope for the best...... :) Thanks for replying.
