945 and swimming kills altimeter

I had several 935 fail due to an issue with the altimeter and no longer getting elevation on my runs/cycle rides. My 945 has just failed this month for the same issue. I swim in a pool most days and do a lot of sea swimming too. I wash it after every swim with soapy water. This watch lasted longer at 2yrs 5months but I feel that they should last longer, for the price you pay and it’s supposed to be a triathlon watch! Of course I suspect it’s out of warranty now too. Has anyone else had this issue and managed to bring it back to life?

I have cleaned it with a toothbrush but despite my best efforts it still isn’t working.

What Garmin do you think is really suitable for daily swimming and running/cycling?

  • The internal sensors failing from indoor swimming is a known issue. The 945 previously used to record indoor swimming water temperature, however the chlorine was found to be degrading sensors significantly faster than salt water. A software update was pushed which disables the indoor water temperature sensor. If the damage is already done you should be able to RMA it because it's a known issue. Contact support
