Feature Request: Bicycling detection should be improved (Forerunner 945)

Hello all,

The bicycling detection should really be improved.

When I'm going on my motorbike with speeds up to 115 km/h, then why is this being detected as a bicycling session? It should be easy to detect that you can't have that acceleration and speeds combined with a very low heart rate...please fix that.

My Samsung smartwatch that I used before switching over to Garmin (beginning of 2020) NEVER misinterpreted motorbike trips as "bicycling".

For now, I am always deleting these bogus sessions from the calendar as they are useless.

  • It detected around 90% of me walking around as elliptical sessions so not surprised it messes up on a motorbike. I turned it off ages ago to stop my calendar being filled with spurious elliptical activities as Garmin support were of zero help.

  • I sometimes had the elliptical activity instead of walking too but it seems they improved that since I'm no longer seeing it. But it should be very easy to distinguish motorbike and bicycling sessions (the watch even has real bicycling data to compare with). Even the world record holder couldn't do 115 km/h with a heart rate of 52...physically impossible.

  • Autodection of actiities does NOT activate the GPS, so the watch doesn't know the speed you are moving at. Your Samsung may have turned GPS on automatically, but there is a reason why Garmin has such massive battery life comparedd with Samsung and other smart watches.

If it bothers you, turn Activity Tracking> Move IQ to Off.

  • "Massive battery life" - really? It's not better than the Samsung has been. With one hour training, I have to charge the 945 every day, it's not better than the Samsung. And it's not only about GPS, it also has x/y acceleration sensors and stuff, otherwise it couldn't detect the activity at all. I maintain that it should be possible to distinguish motorbiking from bicycling even without GPS. Samsung didn't activate GPS with smart activities either as far as I remember.

  • Turn off Move IQ. It is of no use. Those Move IQ sessions you see and delete are not real activities and cannot be converted to that. They are not used for anything, not included in any statistics or affects any health or performance values.

That you need to charge your watch everyday sounds very odd. I charge 1-2 times per week and I train 1-3 hours per day.

Do you have the pulse oximeter turned on? Do you use those values and find them accurate? It isn't used for anything so that function can be turned off if you don't use it.

  • To be fair: the battery isn't empty after one day but if I see that it's at 60% or less in the afternoon, then I'm already charging it and don't wait until the next day when I might be unable to charge it. With training sessions it wouldn't last for two days at least. The watch is 2,5 years old now.

I'm just saying that the Move IQ detection could be better - I know it's only a calendar entry but then it should be the correct activity. Other activities can be detected correctly too. I can live without Move IQ.
