Forerunner 945: no battery warnings for hr strap (feature request)

If the battery runs low in the hr strap of my Garmin FR 945, there's no warning or anything but you can see in Garmin Connect that it just doesn't record certain data any longer, like the running power or ground contact time which you'll only notice afterwards. Only the basic data is there.

Can this be changed so that you get an early battery warning when it's about time to replace it? It would be bad if this happened on a race day or event...it's probably a feature request but anyway. Imagine you're running a half or full marathon and your battery dies in that moment.

Since I record a lot of activities (around 10 hours per week) the battery doesn't last much longer than a few months. I would like to know when it's time to replace it. Even better would be if there was a battery monitor for connected devices so that you can check yourself.

Not sure about the older straps but the newer ones can be checked in Sensors and Accessories on the watch. You can also check the battery status in Garmin Connect Mobile and Garmin Connect when it's been used in an activity. And there's another place that I can't think off at the moment where you can see all the recently connected sensors and their status too. And on the newer watches there is an alert message for the battery status on the sensors.

  • Yes, Garmin Connect App and Web just shows "OK" and you can check on the watch manually but that's not what I am looking for. I'd like to receive a notification when the battery should be replaced. Checking the status manually every day isn't really practical and all you can see is "OK" as it seems, so no percentage or anything.

  • I also checked the status on the watch today: the only thing you can see here is "OK" too so all that is of no use to notice an upcoming battery failure.

I am using the HRM-Tri by the way that comes with the watch. Not sure which "new" watches and straps you are referring to.

I do remember that I received a battery warning one time before I changed the first battery so it seems there were also software changes.

  • I've got the HRM-Tri and have received a low battery alarm on the watch. I've only swapped the battery once, will be interesting to see if the warning comes up again.

  • Was that last year? I have to add that I do a lot more sessions now so that the battery doesn't last that long anymore. Maybe the warning is set to come up after year or something rather than the actual usage in hours. But I did see it once and never again. This is now the 3rd battery in the strap.

  • I own the FR 945 and a HRM-Pro and can confirm that there is a battery warning on the watch. After the first warning, there is enough time to do several hours of running. I normally wait until the third or fourth warning.

  • this sounds like an issue with your HRM-Tri.  I encourage you to reach our directly to your local Garmin Product Support:

  • Thank you, but it's no longer under warranty and apart from the missing battery warning it's working perfectly, so I wouldn't replace it at this time. If there should be a battery warning, then that's fine.

  • I'm closing this as resolved as you confirmed that there should be a battery warning under regular circumstances. Since my strap is no longer under warranty and wouldn't be replaced for free, I'm just leaving it as-is since everything else is working fine.
