Third cable for my Garmin forerunner

Hi,

today I received my third cable to charge my Garmin Forerunner 945. I have had the forerunner for three years now. I don’t wear it everyday, but I workout a lot (mainly running and cycling, some swimming, 45 hours a month).

I think the problem is due to corrosion of the charging cable from my sweat, however it is a hassle. First I bought an official Garmin cable but as they don’t last any longer than the cheap ones I now buy a generic one.

does anyone have the same problem I have?
I am considering buying a forerunner 955 solar and would like to now if anyone has problems with that one too (although it has et been on the market long enough maybe)

thanks in advance!

What is your cleaning routine after an activity? I rinse mine and dry it before connecting a cable after every activity. I have no corrosion issues either on the cable or the watch.

  • That is probably the problem, I do not always clean and dry before charging!

  • Is the charging cable corroding due to your sweat? Why don't you rinse the watch and let it dry before you put it to charge? You don't have to charge it that often. I usually charge my watch 1-2 times a week and usually while I'm eating so the watch is always clean and dry when I put it to charge. I never shower with the watch since you still need to remove it after the shower to dry the watch and your arm under the watch so better to remove it before, rinse it and dry it with a towel and then let it air dry.

I use the small rubber caps for the charging port which keeps the sweat, moist and dirt out of the charging port, but can at the same time trap moist so make sure you remove the cap from time to time to let it dry if you use those caps.

  • I've had my 945 for over three years now and still have the original charging cable. I almost always charge the watch after having cleaned and dried it, but occasionally I have to charge on the go (really long activity, heavily using navigation). Before doing that, I simply clean the charging port on the watch with some clean water and quickly dry it with some cloth.
