Failing to transfer data between Garmin 945 & Matrix CXM spin bike

I've recently bought an indoor spin bike, the Matrix CXM. In the product description it lists having ANT+ & Bluetooth, and the console on the bike can display speed/cadence/power. It is states it's Zwift compatible but I'm less fussed about sorting that at the moment.

I'm wanting to ideally get two things by pairing my watch with the bike but I can't get either. Firstly I want the HR from my watch to display on the bike console. Secondly, putting my watch on "bike indoor" mode, I'm wanting to record the stats from my time on the bike inc distance/power/speed.

I have set the bike to enable ANT+ pairing, on my watch I have set it to auto-broadcast HR during exercise. I have added both sensors that the watch found from my bike which were HR and one called Trainer. However, when I start cycling on the bike I can see my watch is transmitting HR but nothing appears on the bikes console, and on the watch i can't see any speed or power readings.

What am I missing? It's driving me mad.

Thanks in advance to an advice.

  • For the HR to be displayed on the bike you need to make it listen to HR. Maybe it needs to be paired. Now it sounds like you added HR from the bike to the watch. It can probably send the HR that it receives from a HR sensor.
Have you enabled "Pair HR" on the bike? That setting is found in Manager mode on the bike next to the ANT+ setting. Manual: https://content.johnsonfit.com/inc/uploaded_media/14b6c0f448071395c83bff23f79a25b0/frame_owners_guide/e4c0d499676e7322ed100f72b188c895.pdf

  • Thanks for the reply. Yes, I've been in manager mode and have both Pair HR enabled, and ANT+ Broadcast enabled. This results in my watch picking up and connecting to both a HR sensor and a Trainer sensor

  • You don't need to connect the HR from the bike since the watch already got it. Remove that sensor.

Enable the broadcast HR manually to make sure it works and is displayed on the bike display.

  • I'd tried that last night and it didn't work. However, I've just found something in the manager part of the console that said HR TEST, and in opening that it prompted me to select which source to get HR from and that allowed me to select my 945 - and now I have HR showing on the bike console!! Thanks for the help.

What I still can't get is the power/distance etc from the bike to appear on my watch. The watch says it's paired. I'm wondering if I need some form of bridging tech like CABLE?

  • If it is connected as a trainer it should work, but it requires that the bike to send the data. Maybe the support for Matrix CXM can help to clarify how it should work.

  • Yeah - I've reached out to them. Unsure how helpful they'll be as I've bought the bike 2nd hand so they'll no doubt try and charge me for support or say they can't help. Thanks for your help!!

  • Is the bike sending speed and power data etc? Try pedaling the bike and scanning for Speed and Power sensors from Sensors and Accessories on the watch.

  • I'm having the same issue here regarding the speed/cadence/power. I wonder whether there should also be options to connect to power/speed/cadence sensors rather than just the smart trainer?

It is possible the spin bike does not broadcast the data. If speed, power, or cadence are not visible in Sensors & Accessories then the chances are it does not.

I have a Tacx trainer and the connection to the Trainer is AFAIW, for the watch to control the trainer not for the trainer to send data to the watch.

  • As an update, I've heard from Matrix and whilst the bike does transmit power/cadence/speed etc, it's essentially a group spin bike and the data that's transmitted is in a specific format to display on software as part of group classes.

However, I've spoken with NPE who produce NPE Cable, the Ant+ bridge. They're confidence the device can receive the output from the bike and transmit the right data in bluetooth to an app, and potentially my watch if I set my watch to find the device as a bluetooth sensor. I can't find anywhere that has the Cable in stock at the mo but getting one of those is my current plan.
