Garmin Connect <> Forerunner 945 lost all ability to sync as of a few days ago - bug with March 4th 2022 Android update?

As of March 8th, 2022, no activities will sync from my Garmin Forerunner 945 to my phone or my connect account. I connected my phone to my computer and manually uploaded the .fit files and confirmed everything was fine there. After that, I've uninstalled the Garmin Connect app on my Android phone and factory reset (reset to defaults and removed all data) from the watch twice, including once with skipping "True Up".

Wi-Fi sync from the watch does not work, and neither does sync between my phone and my watch (see screenshots 2-6 below).

I don't seem to be the only person having issues, Garmin Connect has fresh 1-star reviews in the Android Play Store that say the same thing (see 1st screenshot below). Looks like Garmin may have introduced a bug with their March 4th, 2022 updates.

Any help available from Garmin to resolve this issue?

  • Have you tried syncing with Garmin Express?

  • I'm on MacOS, and I installed Garmin Express and ran into roadblocks there too. Going straight from Garmin Express on my Mac it said "Forerunner 945 - This device is not compatible with Express" (see first screenshot). Then I tried from the Garmin Connect website to load my workouts onto my Forerunner 945 - that successfully opened the Express application, but it then asked for credentials and I entered the same credentials as I login to the website with and it said "We're unable to sign you in because our servers are unavailable at this time." (see second screenshot). I'm open to suggestions to get Express working if that would help debug the Connect issue, but I'd be just as happy with any fix that got Connect working without delving into Express.

The one thing that did work for me was using an MTP tool to download the .fit files from my Forerunner 945 to my Mac, and then uploading them directly to the Garmin Connect website https://connect.garmin.com/modern/import-data, and that worked. Since then, I've done two factory resets on my watch and now I'm at the point where I can't even load saved workouts onto the watch. The Android app does correctly update the watchface (Connect IQ) and do an initial sync with the watch (the main Connect app), so it's connected properly via bluetooth, my phone has internet, and all that (see third screenshot, which shows last connected time as after the resets but before the sync failures).

  • There is currently some issues with logging into Garmin Connect and has been for a few days now. I can login but get held up every time and must do a refresh of the page to get in. Maybe your issues are related to that.

I suggest you contact Garmin Support: https://support.garmin.com/

  • If you havent done that before - can you turn off wifi on your phone and retry ? This may be your wifi network problem.

  • Thanks Andy! I'll post any updates support provides here.

  • I've been experiencing similar sync issues since upgrade to firmware 9.00. Sync with MacOS app doesn't work at all. Sync with Garmin Connect on mobile (iOS) is working only after I power off the watches and turn it on again. What a great revision, no major features and annoying bugs.

  • I’m able to sync with No issues on fw 9.00 and iOS 15.4 on my iPhone 12.

  • same problem. fr945 and android garmin connect. I must do a repair every sync. As the garmin connect do not keep the FR945 in its list. I have and edge with no issues.

  • Quick update, I've been in touch with Garmin support and the issue still isn't fixed.
I tried "Delete Data & Settings" on the watch, installed the android app on my wife's phone (who has never used Garmin before), created a new Garmin account, and tried pairing the watch and her phone. I got an error in the Garmin Connect android app saying "Pairing failed" even though the watch was paired and connected in the Android bluetooth menu. I tried a bunch of variations of this with no luck. This is nuts, the fact that I can't use the watch with a new phone/new account implies the watch software is incompatible with the latest android Garmin Connect app (v4.53).
Is there a better way to reset the watch to factory defaults?
Is there a way to update or revert the software on the watch?
  • You should not pair in the bluetooth menu. Remove the watch from there. Then set the watch in pairing mode and open Garmin Connect on the phone and add the device.
