Does the 945 continue recording an activity if you plug it in to charge it while recording an activity?

Does the 945 continue recording an activity if you plug it in to charge it while recording an activity?

I am thinking a new edge device will not come out this year. I already have a 945 that will work with all my garmin devices while cycling. I am thinking of getting a garmin etrex for mapping my bikepacking and bikepack racing.

Only issue is that I will need to charge the device while in use. I have a cache battery that I will be bringing with me to charge multiple devices already. Can I charge the 945 while I am riding and will it keep recording everything? I do not want to lose the data and track!

Thank you for your help!

  • I wonder what you do differently. Whenever I’ve attempted this as soon as I plug in the charger the charge screen comes up and the activity is stopped. I can charge the watch during an activity if I go to Resume Now so I guess that’s an option and something I’d forgotten about.

But charging while the activity is in progress? Not something I’ve been able to achieve.

  • Do you charge with a computer or do you use a USB charger? I never use a computer for charging.

I did a test now and when I put the watch on charge the black overlay at the top comes down over the first data field with a battery icon indicating I'm charging.

  • Yes!  I just did an indoor ride with the watch connected to a powerbank.  Works perfect just as you said.  Going to keep the 130 plus for outdoor rides.  For my long distance multi day races I will leave the 130 at home and run the 945, with the rally pedals, inreach mini and the varia radar.  I will use my phone und run RWGPS with the course track on it for navigation. I am bringing the phone anyways. Looks like I wont bother with a new garmin edge when they come out.

    Thanks Much!!!!

  • If you plug it to computer it doesn't work, it needs to be stupid charger.

  • Thanks for that. I've been doing this wrong for years as I'v never had a powerbank. My other half has always just connected to a computer at aid stations as that's all we had to hand.

Apologies to the OP for being wrong and possibly causing a bit more angst than necessary.

  • Not so great of battery life when you have pedals, varia radar and a inreach attached to it.  But I was also using it for mapping. If mapping is not being used it would probably last much longer.

I use PM pedals and Varia, but not an inreach.

I had always thought the Varia to be a battery sucking vampire. So much so that I gave my Edge 520 Plus away to a friend because it wasn't lasting a 200km ride and replaced it with a 530. Then I discovered the real problem was the backlight on the Edge - it was coming on every time a car passed, but I wasn't noticing the backlight during the day. Shortening the backlight duration dramatically decreased the power consumption the Varia was causing on the head unit.  It's even better on the watch, as you can turn the backlight off entirely (or at least have it only After Sunset).

  • Not necessarily true. In the settings of the watch you can select how it behaves when connecting to a computer. The setting is called 'USB-modus'. There are two settings, Garmin or MTP. In MTP modus, the watch will automatically stop an activity and starts to synchronise. In Garmin modus, the watch asks whether you want to activate MTP or not. Select no, and the activity will continue to run.

  • No Problem!  With all the garmin products we own there always seems to be some angst!  lol

  • Ok. Interesting. I would say that the MTP is the default one. I think the is just fine for me.

I use a Varia and I can't say I recall any impact on my 945 but it's been a while since I did a long enough ride that I would even notice.  Now you've got me curious.
