Forerunner 945 short battery life

I got a forerunner 945 a few weeks ago. The  battery life was good (about 10 days) until this last week. The battery seems to drain quickly. An example is today at 0500 the battery was at 98%, now at 0913 the battery is down to 88 % already.

I have gone to setting and set music provider to phone and restarted the phone. I have taken seconds off of my watch face and done a few other things to drain the battery the least it can be.

Any thoughts or things to try would be great.

Thanks!

  • After the reset that was suggested above my drain seems to be at anywhere from .15 to .6 / hour

  • some good advice in this thread to which i will add

    1. try to determine if the drain is when exercising or not.

    2. change gnss to gps-only

    3. try turning wifi off completely

    4. look at the optical hr settings and adjust to the minimum that would be useful to you.

    5. check the backlight settings

    6. consider the effect of playing music.

I'm not saying that you should use your watch with everything turned off but rather try to work out what the cause is by a process of elimination

battery life will naturally deteriorate over many charge cycles say by 20% over 2-3 years...ie a much longer timeframe than what you are reporting.

  • In my case is the GPS. My first unit used roughly 10% battery/hour just with GPS regardless the settings. Garmin sent me a second unit that for some time was better but after 1 year I am close to 10% drain again. Note I haven't seen diferences with GPS modes or with sensors connected (powermeter, HR, speed...), so my guess is that something is wrong with the SONY GPS chipset.

When I was injured and no GPS-activities, my watch easily reaches 2 weeks in smartwatch mode. Not totally sure, but it seems the new Epix/Fenix are not using the SONY chip anymore... maybe it is somenthing there.

  • Try a big full reset of watch :

    - Connect watch to the PC (don't open Garmin Express)

    - Open the watch storage in file explorer

    - Delete all files (some files not deleting because it's protected, it's normal, you cannot delete it)

    - Disconnect watch and wait some minutes until the initialization menu appears

    - Connect watch to PC and open Garmin Express, it download all files like Languages, Map and others.

    - Configure you watch like the first start.
