Fr945 GPS accuracy vs F6

Hi, we have a problem. I have Fenix 6XPro, my girlfriend have Forerunner 945. We often do a walk together. Starting activity at the same time, stoping also at the same time. But girlfriend (F945) always have a distance ca. 15% larger. Last day we did also walk. She even started activity later than me... and at the end she had much larger distance.
Below I am showing a maps of this activities. Mine is at the bottom, her is at the top. (6,94km vs 8,50km).
Easy to see, that my track is smooth. Her is much less accurate.

Chip is the same at both watches. Both watches has the same GPS setting - GPS + GLONAS. What else can be wrong here?
Is there any smoothing option to turn on, so the accuracy will be better?
Thanks in advance.

  • Check that you are using the same setting for Data Recording. Also make sure none of you got Auto pause enabled.

  • You mean Data Fields in Activity recording? Almost sure girlfriend has default DataFields, I have some downloaded from Garmin's shop.
Auto Pause we both have enabled, but checked that both watches pause and un-pause activities in the same time (+- few seconds) but we are very rarely stoping, so Auto Pause may not be responsible for 20% of the walk.
We will check today or tomorrow Walk with the same Data Fields.
    Thanks.

  • I mean "Data Recording". Check in Settings->System->Data Recording. You can select "Smart" or "Every second". To compare two watches it is probably best to select  "Every second" to get the most similar recording.

Auto pause is good to keep disabled when you compare the tracks since it can make the position jump and since you see a difference in recorded time it means that the logged distance will be different.

  • It's not about Data Fields.

Data recording is the time intervals that the watch captures GPS data.
The best option is 1 sec.
For the forerunner 945 is something like:

    Menu>System>Data Recording>Every second.

You should disable Auto-pause too, at least, for testing it.

  • we are very rarely stoping, so Auto Pause may not be responsible

You don't have to be stopped for auto-pause to kick in, you only need to have a degraded satellite signal. I've always left auto-pause off as it has generally caused more problems than it's worth.

  • 1-sec vs smart recording will only make a difference wrt the plotted route... not for the recorded distance, pace, etc.

But from what I see the F6 is a lot more squiggly which especially at lower speeds has a higher impact. This is probably due to worse GPS reception with the F6 (I know back with the F5 this was already the case and was the reason for me to bring it back and get the FR935 which was way better).

So I would say your 945 is the most correct one and the F6 the 'bad' one. And again, this is more noticable at lower speeds, tree coverage (and in my experience near water).

  • Metal bezel on Fenix makes the GPS accuracy worse, it's been like this in F5 and its even worse in F6.
