Race an activity not in history?

Hi all,

I've a race tomorrow and thought I'd race against my previous PB, but it was 2 years ago and not in history on the watch anymore. I have sent it to the watch and it appears in the downloaded section where I can select it. However, I understand that when using from history is uses the actual pace of the previous activity but only the average for a course sent to the watch. Is it possible for me to send the previous race to the watch and actually follow my previous mile by mile to tr to follow it? Seems daft it strips that data when you send an old activity! H

Can anyone confirm if an old activity sent back and then selected in training>race an activity>downloaded will use the actual pace from the activity or are shown below, a pointless average?

From History

This option is used to select a previously recorded activity from the watch. Dynamic speed/pace will be displayed and a virtual partner/racer will match the speed/pace of the previously recorded activity (refer to your owner's manual for more details on virtual partner/racer).

Downloaded

This option is used to select a course that has been downloaded from your Garmin Connect account.

    • Racing a Course Created in Garmin Connect
      • The average speed/pace used to create the course in Garmin Connect will be the constant speed/pace of the virtual partner/racer.
    • Racing a Course Created From an Activity Within Garmin Connect
      • If the course has not been edited, it will have zero speed/pace and will need to be edited to have an average speed/pace.

    The procedure is simple: you need to connect the 945 to Garmin Connect via PC. Open the activity saved on Connect that you want to compete against. Click on the wheel at the top right and click on "send to device". Once sent, just pre-start the race, select "race against activity", select the one you just downloaded from the downloads and select "race". The race will take place meter by meter against the reference activity, also fully reflecting any changes in pace, progressions, etc ....

    Hi, I found your post after wondering the same thing myself. I have a 945 and on Monday I ran an activity using the 'race against activity' option. I used one I already had downloaded on my watch from about a month ago. It's a 4-5 hours fell race route (Bilsdale) and has a lot of ascent/descent, so average speeds meaningless. My conclusions:

    1. You can't run a course and race an activity at the same time. This is annoying.

    2. It's useless. I had a target time of 4.10. I assumed it would remember my pace at each point along the way. It immediately put me about 1hr30 behind schedule right from the beginning, and this didn't vary much. The estimated finish time was a bit more realistic and became more accurate towards the end. Initially the ETA was ridiculous, giving me a very generous (fast) estimated finish time despite being at the first checkpoint (38 minutes) in an almost identical time to my last run.

    Conclusion? Not useful. You're better off (if you have them) just using split times at key points from previous runs.

    Regarding "Race an activity" functionality, there are many bug reports in this forum for many models (Fenx5, 645, 945, etc) indicating this functionality does not work at all (including one created by me). I can't see any response from Garmin...

    Fortunately someone published a workaround to make it work https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/fenix-5-series/239355/how-to-race-an-activity-hint-don-t-race-an-activity In my case, those steps work perfect on my garmin 945.

    I don't understand why Garmin does not fix this bug with the "Race an activity" option because it seems it works using this workaround, which is exactly the same but less intuitive...
