Notes:

  • For any issues that you encounter please fill out the form included in the download and attach it to an email to [email protected]. Please note that you may not get a response to the email unless we need more information on the issue you report.
  • Although this software is believed to be reliable, it has not yet been released for production and should be used at your own risk

Changes made from version 8.20 to 8.78:

  • Notice: This update is incompatible with the current version of the Garmin Explore mobile app for Android. A compatible version of the Explore app is coming soon.
  • Added Pickleball and Padel activities.
  • Added support for Connect IQ system 5.
  • Updated incident detection to better distinguish between supported and unsupported activities.
  • Modified the software update process to allow the user to defer the installation. This replaces the automatic install during the user's sleep window.
  • Other minor bug fixes and improvements.

Installation Instructions

  1. Connect your Forerunner 945 to your computer using the USB cable.
  2. Download and unzip Forerunner945_878Beta.zip. Place the GUPDATE.GCD file in the \GARMIN folder of your device's internal storage drive. From the RemoteSW folder, copy the GUP3303.GCD file to the device's \Garmin\RemoteSW folder.
  3. Disconnect your device from the computer, approve the update on the watch, and wait for the update to finish.
  4. If you would like to revert to the last public release software, place the GUPDATE-820.GCD file in the \GARMIN folder. Rename GUPDATE-820.GCD to GUPDATE.GCD. Copy the GUP3303-611.GCD file from RemoteSW\Downgrades, place it in the device's \Garmin\RemoteSW folder and rename it to GUP3303.GCD. Disconnect the device to install. NOTE: If you revert to an older version of software, all of your settings will be reset to defaults.
  • Hopefully this fixes the false positive incident detection.  My parents are tired of getting phone calls because I bump my watch on a table!

  • Are there any apps/data fields out there now utilize the new features/functionality of CIQ 5?

Per the5krunner, it looks like the new features for it are:

    • Improved App settings
    • Improved Activity Simulation
    • AMOLED Always on Watch Face 2.0 (obviously not for the 945)
    • Profiler
    • New On-Device Metrics
    • New Analytics
    • New Apps Review Guidelines
    • On Device Store for 2022 Devices
  • fingers crossed. hope 945 will be almost like F7

  • Per the5krunner, it looks like the new features for it are:

    • Improved App settings

    • AMOLED Always on Watch Face 2.0 (obviously not for the 945)
    • Profiler
    • New On-Device Metrics
    • New Analytics
    • New Apps Review Guidelines
    • On Device Store for 2022 Devices

Out of this list, the new On-Device Metrics is the only on device FW related feature relative to the FR945.  And that is just making available to developers the body battery and instant stress (both existing stats in the watch) available to developers to add to watch faces and apps/widgets.

The features like app settings apply to the phone interface in ConnectIQ app to adjust settings.  Activity simulations and profiler are part of the developer SDK tools to build apps.  The new analytics and review guidelines are about the app store itself.

Obviously the On device store and AMOLED don't apply to the FR945.

Don't count on System 5 making the watch any different than what it is today, other than you will get some new watch faces and apps using data the watch already has that previously was not exposed to developers.

  • Also, access to on device recovery time, v02max and activity history.

Possible access to sleep scores, health snapshot and pregnancy tracking as well? Will this be more for web apps?

    https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2021/10/garmins-connect-iq-system-5-platform-updates-a-round-up.html

  • While DCrainmaker does a great job of writing up all that was covered at the GDVC, he kind of lumped 2 of the 3 different developer areas all under the CIQ updates.  Those are Connect Developer program, Connect IQ program, and the ANT+ Developer Program.  He lumped the Connect Developer program and the CIQ programs together, but from a developers perspective they are very different and have different uses.

The Connect Developer Program is used to interact the data already synced from the watch to the Garmin Connect Web backend.  The Sleep score, health snapshot and pregnancy tracking are all part of the web APIs.

The ConnectIQ is all about the apps running on the watches.  In this case through existing metrics now being added for developers to access on the watch, i.e. body battery, stress, recovery time, Vo2max, and activity history.  In addition it includes the tools for developers to develop the watch apps, i.e simulator, app settings, profiler, store analytics and review guidelines.

The reality is on the watch the only real add for end users is now the 5 additional data metrics soon to be available to developers to access.  The other chances in System 5 help developers provide more polish/better user experience when writing the apps.  Until CIQ 4.1 SDK goes GA, you developers can't release apps that support these new metrics.  The good news is, it looks like that is closer to happening.

  • While I do appreciate the betas coming out, it not being compatible with the current android app is quite a big thing imo!

If releasing this to the public at least make sure that's in order? (Especially if an update is released 'soon'... ppl can wait a little longer for a beta they don't know is coming while waiting for being able to use the app again is a bigger issue)

  • It's the current Explore app that it's incompatible with, not the Connect app. So IMHO it's not a deal-breaker.

  • Ah you're right... my bad! That makes it way less of an issue indeed (but I still think betas should at least be compatible with the common apps from the company itself)

  • After this update my heart rate and accelerometer stopped !! any one else having the same issue ?
