Running Activity - GPS Major Fails Recently

About once every 7-8 runs lately I've been getting some major GPS issues where, despite waiting for satellite lock/green-light at the start, my track ends up looking like the below.  It appears to not have acquired satellite until 4+ miles into the run.  Thank goodness I run with a Stryd footpod, so distance is unaffected, but elevation change is impacted as this entire straight section is shown as flat lined on elevation.  I'm up to date on all FW versions, anyone else having this or can offer a solution?  There's no indication during the activity itself, I guess because of the Stryd footpod showing me pace/distance.

  • Other thing is the good old cure all which is hold the light button until screen goes black for a good solid restart.

A couple things worth looking at, one is to pull up the navigation map screen and see if it shows you in the right spot.  (might help rule out postprocessing issues or something on the server side)  If you have Strava/MMR or other third party sync site... is it messed up there also?

There is also a GPS file on the watch that I have seen people mention to delete and re-acquire satellite data, but I don't know much about that or even what the instructions are, but sure you can find via search.

It is also very strange that as soon as your Respiration rate started reading well... your GPS picked up. :-/

  • Yeah I should've mentioned I have done the soft-restart with the light button several different times.

I didn't think about about a map check prior to the run, but your strava comment reminded me that I do in fact get segment alerts on this route and where they're supposed to be, so the GPS apparently knows where I am?  It's a weird thing for sure.

I've also noticed in this same timespan that sometimes satellite "lock" can take a long long time - alot longer than it should (3+ minutes vs 10-20sec).  Therefore I've gotten into the habit of acquiring satellites well prior to my runs, like on the drive over to the run start.

  • Very weird!

That sounds like an issue with the GPS file on watch if i recall right... i would look into that solution!

  • Whenever I have a rough looking track or it takes an extra amount of time acquiring a GPS lock I think back to how my cars’ GPS has been acting in the past.

Just Saturday, we were locked onto the South bound side of the expressway (was in an active route) while heading North. I had to stop the routing and wait forever for us to show up on the correct side of the road. It’s never been that bad since owning the car (this was the builtin navigation system of the car). This was after using android auto connected to the phone and it was so far off I tried the builtin navigation... so happening to two different devices tells me GPS issues outside of my control.

I have been giving a little slack to the 945 for the past year or so since seeing issues in my other GPS devices.
