Swimming distance not recording right after charging the watch

Since last week I have a strange issue when pool swimming with Forerunner 945. When I charge the watch during the night and then go for a swim in the morning, the watch doesn't measure distance. When I restart the watch everything starts working smoothly. It kind of seems as if the accelerometer wasn't working after taking the watch off the charger.  I noticed this behaviour about a week ago, didn't have any issues before. I have this watch for about 2 years now, using software version 8.20, sensor hub 14.05.  Did anybody have similar experience? I am not sure if it is related to recent firmware update or is my watch slowly dying on me?

  • I just had the same issue with brand new Fenix 7S so this is not 945 specific. For me soft reset (=holding the light button for 30s) is the only solution which works for both 945 and 7S. Apparently Garmin knows about the issue, at least from what I found on the internet, so I hope that they will fix it in some future update (I think that the pressure from people who just bought brand new Fenix 7 will be bigger then from someone who owns 3 years old 945 unit...)

  • Thanks Kevi,

I look forward to trying this out at the pool tomorrow morning.

Appreciate you posting this update !! My 945 has been a ripper in every other way so I am hopeful your work around is successful.

So sorry your fenix 7 has the same issue! That's pretty rough given the hype aroung these flagship watches.

    Come on Garmin!!

    Pete

  • My Fenix 7 just got an update to 8.18 and there is one interesting line in the change log:

"Fixed potential issue causing 0 recorded distance for Pool Swim activities"

There seems to be a new update for 945xt as well but this line is missing in the change log :/ Let's hope they fixed it anyway...

  • A couple of weeks ago my 945 stopped recording distance in the pool as well. I have been swimming outside all summer so it might have just happened. Last indoor was June of this year. I have the new software as well

  • Mine did this today. I charged it just before I left the house. I switched it to walk to see if it was just the swim lap function and did a 100 Meter walk in the pool and it said I had gone .02 miles at a 57 min mile pace!!!

Later I walked outside and it recorded it normally. Only other thing different was the pool was 94 degrees hot because someone left the boilers on over the weekend.

  • Since a couple of months my 945 (13.00) has problems with measuring distance. It seems randomly. A reset seems to help, but is a pain in the ass when the training already has started. I also figured out that using the drill screen seems to trigger the problem. When for example doing a kick drill midd swim session and using the drill screen, after that I stops measuring distance when doing regular laps. But yesterday the problem occurred right from the start. I do not think it is a hardware issue. The problem was noted before (2 to 3 years ago) and fixed (somewhere with update 8+), but I looks like more people are still having problems.
