Suggestions for Altimeter

I am writing to Garmin representatives. It's hard not to notice that on the latest firmware 8.20 for 945 and 20.00 for the Fenix 6 series, there were problems with calibrating the altimeter height. Explain what settings the smartphone should have in order for the calibration to produce the correct result every night. I noticed in the Garmin connect sync reports that not every night the watch goes through to calibrate. In the first days after the update to 8.20 in Auto mode, the calibration worked correctly even at night. In addition, it turned out to use the digital elevation profile model DEM, and now, when running Run with gps, auto-calibration is performed at the same start point to the true altitude value. But it is unclear which item from the priority list is selected when calibrating against a previously stored DEM height or manual calibration. Or does it not work at all? The source of information took from here - support.garmin.com/.../  There is a proposal to exclude mandatory calibrations at night. Please create up-to-date information on the calibration of the Altimeter in the latest firmware and show the link. Thank you for striving to make the watch program better.

The goal of At Start calibration is to provide a consistent relative starting elevation for users that do multiple activities at specific locations. It will not calibrate again during the activity. When the timer is started the watch will try to determine the best elevation source to calibrate to, based on the following priority:

View priority list

  1. Manual calibration immediately prior to starting the activity
  2. Prior manual calibration point at the same location
  3. Recent manual calibration, if the quality of the calibration is determined to be good enough
  4. Map data (DEM), if available
  5. Prior Connected DEM point at the same location:
    • Connected DEM refers to elevation data from the Garmin Connect app on a paired smartphone
  6. Connected DEM, if currently connected to a phone
  7. Prior GPS point at the same location
  8. GPS, if a good fix has been acquired:
    • After acquiring a GPS fix the timer ring will turn yellow. At that point, it can take up to 30 seconds for the GPS elevation to settle. If vertical speed settles to less than .1 m/s the GPS elevation data will be considered good enough use for altimeter calibration.
    • Before starting the timer, the elevation data field on the watch will preview the calibrated elevation
  • There is also a suggestion. Considering that auto-calibration works at the starting point of the lesson, I propose to add the possibility of automatic calibration with each subsequent passage of this point during activity (running, cycling). That is, when running in a circle at the start point, the height should be set (adjusted) according to DEM. An option, if you make several preliminary DEM adjustments to the altitude along the race track at several points, is also desirable. Partially such opportunities exist in EDGE.
