8.20 Software Discussion

Hi all!

Figured since 8.20 was now live for everybody, would be fun to have a discussion thread.  I haven't kicked the tires yet as I won't run with it in the AM, but my big hope is they resolved the bug where the backlight was on the entire time while running.

As I'm also in between training programs, I'm looking forward to seeing the overhaul of the Daily Workout Suggestions, which might be one of my favorite new features Garmin's put into these watches.

Anyone notice anything good/bad/indifferent with this update?

  • Downloaded yesterday and tried a 6km walk and a 20km run: I state that I have never had problems recording sleep and training status even with previous versions, good gps track follows the real road quite well, I use RDP and band cardio Verity sense ant +, foot pod ble and remained stable without ever disconnections, finally the pulse oximeter measurement works all the times and the graphics are also clear (big circle in progression), altimeter still inaccurate but I think unsolvable on the wrist with body heat , the battery consumption seems to me unchanged, I haven't tried the music yet. I'm happy with this update, using stock dial and Garmin only CIQ applications (challenges and running power), wifi and bt always disabled except when I manually sync. Once I downloaded the update with GE I performed a hard reset as always, the optical sensor did not work and I had to disable and re-enable it, then OK, the altimeter went from +118 meters to -21, after calibration on the balcony OK.

  • Unresolved bug: Workouts for Today scheduled after 5pm PT don't show up on watch Training Calendar.

  • Unresolved bug: No audio prompt for workout countdown alerts/beeps on Connect App.

  • Stil terrible altitude reading (945 after  "long" reset). I made few times calibration for 115 m nad after few minuts I have 195 m... Previously, the height measurement was more consistent.

  • Altitude algorithm is flaky. While at home and not moving significantly my altitude is drifting up-and-down along with air pressure changes.

  • It is nomral if it drist +/- 10 m but not 80-90 m

  • Mine usually drifts about -/+ 3m while at home. If I’m not moving around much it should note changes as being air pressure. Seems it got worse but that’s just my observation. It’s gone from +20m to -11m in the two hours since I got back from my last run today

  • I have set Altimeter on Auto. Today after fix I started running 5k. In the last update, Garmin promised an altitude correction at start and continuous correction to DEM data during the run. So... at beginning I had correct alt 112 m then 190 m and finished in starting point with 70 m. Now at home after 30 minuts I see 12 m...

  • Swimming Pool doesn't record laps.

  • Yes it does, and strokes.
