My Forerunner 945 has not tracked VO2 max since July. Prior to that, it was reliably tracking both run and cycle VO2 Max. I'm running version 7.80. As I have been training for an IM, I don't think it is due to lack of time/effort.

Strange, seems like mine is hte opposite these days gives me a vo2max even on days that really shouldn't give a result (short, low HR, erratic pacing, etc). Have you tried a restart, seems to help most things... (press hold the upper left button for ~30sec, keep holding past emergency alert warning)? Do you have a somewhat recent weigh in? Do you use a strap or the optical HR?
One other thing to check is that your Heart rate data is setup right? Have you entered an accurate maximum HR?
Do you have Training Status active? What is it showing for training status, load, there? Much of that comes from your vo2max, so likely that is all hosed up also.
I would try changing your maximum HR up by 1bpm just to get it update for sure. :-/ Wear a HR strap if you have one on runs/bikes as well.
I have recently had a problem with my watch not syncing phsyio stats (heat, vo2, sleep score, etc) to my account when syncing with phone, does your watch vo2max display match your Garmin COnnect?
If it doesn't match... or even if you rarely do it... connect to a computer with cable to sync with Garmin Express software. Might be worth a shot.
