New to garmin: calendar sync?

Hi,

I am about to buy my first garmin watch.

But I dont seem to find an answer on the one question I still have.

There is a calendar integrated, the one that shows the calender items from the default calendar on the phone. For example from your gmail account calendar.

But how does this work? Does it need bluetooth connection each time you open it. And more importantly does it notify calendar alerts even when at that moment phone connection is lost.

I was hoping the cal on the watch syncs now and then when the phone is connected, so that calendar alarms works even when out of range of the phone.

Someone can confirm or elaborate?

Thank you!

  • Simply put for anything to sync from the phone to the watch the phone must be in range with Garmin Connect Mobile (GCM) open, at the very least in the background.

There will be no syncing of the phone is out of range or GCM is not running in the background.

  • Thank you. I do get that.

    Is logical.

But once synched and then out of range. Do calendar alarms work for the synched calendar items, even if at that moment out of range.

My current polar does not really have a calendar app and only "forwards" notifications of the phone. When i am at that moment out of range. I miss the calendar alarm.

  • So I think it might be like this

    • calendar app only shows calendar items (get these from the phone on each start of the widget)
      it does not sync items
    • calendar app does not alert either, is plain simple viewer
    • alerts are being sent from the phone
    • So in the end if I am out of reach at the time of an calendar reminder, I wont get notified on the watch

    If someone could confirm?

  • Yes I think you may be right, I just don’t think anyone has tested and confirmed this. Maybe a question you could raise and check with Garmin technical support.

  • I think you are right about calendar notifications (they are just notifications coming the phone, just like other notifications). However, at least on my Fenix 5+, the calendar widget *does* sync a couple of calendar items even if you have no connection to the watch (then it just shows an exclamation mark to notify that there is no real-time connection).

So if you have no phone connection, you get no calendar alert notifications, but you can still view on the watch calendar items for today/tomorrow (a couple of items).
