Altitude and calibration

Hi. I want ask you some information about altitude and his calibration. I did some test about DEM calibrate and I see that altitude have difference from official altitude, from Google Earth and from some app that give me altitude with same DEM data. And this is strange, because I test it in my city that is in a place without mountains or something else, and because in teory I wait same result that start from DEM and datum WGS84 for every program, or not? For example my central plaza have official altitude of 199m and with Google Earth I have 199m, but with another smartphone app and Garmin it have 204m. On another place, near my home, I have 209m with Google Earth, 216m with Garmin and 213m with this app, and those misures are the same is I try to misure every day. Barometer of my Garmin 945 I see that is ok, because there is allways 10m of difference from plaza to my home, but there is allways this difference. How is possibile? What change?

What do you consider "official altitude"?  If I input my home address on different websites, I get up to a 3M difference on elevation.  They all seem to be "official".

Different sources of information, different data as stated above. Or your GPS fix doesn't have you in the exact same spot.

What is it that you're asking is possible? What change are you referring too?  See the answers above or are you questioning the 10M's from DEM elevation vs evaluation from a barometric altimeter?

  • Official altitude is valor that here in Italy calculate IGM (Istituto Geografico Militare). About question of different sources of information, data from start is the same (there are not two WGS84 globe...), so why with DEM I have two valors?

  • Yes. Garmin's DEM is crap in some parts of the world. I would really hope that they would improve the data. But it's been years and nothing. For example all the courses in Garmin Connect goes via Garmin's elevation corrections and you can't disable it.

This makes all the Pace Pro stuff useless.
