Instant Pace Variability

Recently, I have noticed that my "instant" pace is jumping all over. It's not consistent about when or how. This does happen when trees are around, but certainly not a thick canopy or anything I would be under if trail running. In fact, if I was trail running, I don't think I could use this a gauge for pace. Any suggestions?

  • Enter ‘ instant pace’ in the search box above.

  • Thanks for taking the time to answer, have one, but prefer to stick with watch.

  • Thanks for the taking the time to answer, I am familiar with the search, and I did before asking. No real conclusions specifically or answers specifically. Most recent one was tied to a track which is not what I am inquiring about.

  • I don't think you'll ever get accurate current pace with GPS. Lets just say that GPS it is accurate to about 2-4 meters, so at any time with you being the center and the GPS radius pinging every second around you this could be at a distance of less then one meter or as great as 8 meters apart when you're running. When speed is base on distance over time this is never going to work as you need the GPS to ping the same distance apart every second for it to be accurate... just forget about seeing instant/current pace and set your watch so show the average pace. With that said you have mentioned trees so your GPS circumference of accuracy could be twice as big if not more, so this would mean your current pace would show more exaggerated numbers. For current pace to be accurate you are relying on the GPS location to be pinging exactly on you every second for the whole time during your run.

  • I have found the 945 to be much better than my last watch with instant pace (FR235), but I do agree often it is a bit up/down when at a steady pace.  I have always used Lap Pace (set at 1mile) as my guide as it ends up being pretty steady and a good indicator of pace when training or in a race.  When I setup hard Threshold or Tempo runs, I send a programmed 'Workout' to watch with the fast portion to have half mile splits for two to four miles, then it gives me a faster lap pace gauge to track.  Plus I can see my pace changes after the fact by smaller intervals (end up small 3minute chunks instead of 6minute).

As a good 'Instance Pace" solution, the App 'Custom Pace' (if I remember correctly) allows you to adjust a 'live pace' to include the last 3, 5, 10, 30, or Custom amount of seconds to average out the Live Pace.  For the life of me I can't find it in the App Store however... I'll try to find it.  Or maybe someone here knows it?

**Edit:  Found an old post in 230 forum that I had posted in about 'Configurable Pace' Data Field, I can't find that on the App store now... so thinking it is no longer in service or I am bad at searching!?  There were a few similar 'Average Pace' or 'Custom' etc that might do the trick.

  • I think "Dozen Run" may have the configurable pace data field that you are looking for.

  • Thank you for your thoughts.

  • Thanks for your input. It just seemed to me that it started recently, and I don't recall this happening this sporadically on my 910 or 920. But, all things said, it is possible I just wasn't as fixated. I was not sure if I should send it in for repair, but based on the responses I think I have my answers. Appreciate you taking the time.
