New up to 4% per hour battery drain

New battery drain up to 4% per hour rate started right after Course View maps update via Garmin Express 7.7.1.0. My watch was on SW 5.50 and I tried everything I know how to fix the battery drain (hard reset, music provider, maps re-installation, discharging to 0%), but without success. I even updated my watch to SW 7.20. Now my watch lasts 1-2 days without activity, BT, PulseOx.

Has anybody experienced a similar issue with battery drain last week?

Is there some new workaround to fix it?

Have you tried a full reset to defaults with or without success?

  • I forget, did have you any contact with Garmin Support about this?

  • I contacted with Garmin Support in my country today. No useful information at this moment, maybe later this week.

  • Local Garmin Support recommends a replacement, however only after diagnostic and confirmation in their support center. I will send the watch to the support center and stay without a watch for some period of time. That is all at this moment.

  • Good that they'll replace it. Hope you won't be without it for too long!

I'm back on beta 6.85, so that I have the Device Usage widget plus its logs, keeping an eye on what it's doing, for a bit. I've also followed ADB logging on my Android device while the watch was connected. Learned a lot, but nothing explaining this issue (yet).

  • I installed 6.85 because of the Device Usage widget, expecting to capture a massive overnight battery drain of 30-40% as I was experiencing before. Well, that didn't happen. No inexplicable energy consumption.

But here are the useless statistics, anyway

Device Usage stats after 2 days, started battery fully charged, now at 58%, activities with GPS recorded: 03h12mins:

    Uptime 48:40:16
    Low power 41:23:50
    GCM 28:05:23
    GPS 04:01:51
    BLE scan 01:40:44
    ANT scan 01:24:27
    Backlight 00:09:00
    Wifi 00:00:00

Uptime - Low power = 07:16:26. The sum of GPS, BLE/ANT scan, Backlight, Wifi is almost that same amount of time: 07:16:02

I had PulseOx mode set to 'During sleep', the phone connection constantly active, no data sync, received lots of notifications, and the activities made use of vibrate alerts as well, which isn't energy efficient.

Overall usage was around 20% per 24 hours. With these settings and usage, I guess this in the OK-ish range for a rechargeable battery that is over a year old and has had many charge/discharge cycles. Unfortunately I can't replace the battery in this type of watch. So my next watch will be a Fenix.

  • Today I got a replacement. Hope that the new one will be without battery drain issue.

How about your case? Nothing changed on beta?

  • How did you show these useless statistics ?

  • I haven't checked with the 7.75 beta. I went from 7.20 to 6.85 and back again to 7.20, it seemed OK. ~ 4 days between charges and that's better than my Fenix 5 Plus with a newly replaced battery (and same type of usage).

It seems it was a glitch that occurred once 'the stars aligned' (in a bad way) and then kept happening until a full re-install (a downgrade followed by an upgrade) was done. I'm not hazarding a guess as to why.

I have gone back to using my Fenix 5 Plus (I planned to sell it, but never did). As I can only use one watch, I prefer the one that's old and scratched up so I don't have to be careful with it. Yup, I'm weird.

Still I would like to hear about your experiences with the new device in a week or so.

  • In beta's there a 'device usage widget'. Add that and you get useless stats!

  • Can anyone who has installed firmware 7.80 comment on whether or not it corrects this issue?
