945 OW swim track issues

All of my openwater swims are all over the place even tho my swim laps are perfectly straight when I’m swimming. I’ve a fenix 5 and a 920XT and both show straight cut lines as they should when I’m swimming.
I don’t ever stop and I always front crawl. Nothing changes. I’ve been in touch with Garmin and I’ve got to send the file etc etc. This is my 3rd 945. Piece of garbage tbh.
Now the treadmill is way off. I do an hour at 10kmph speed. I get a mix of kms between 4:00-4:50-6:30-7:25. I remain at the same pace on the treadmill and my arms remain bouncing in the same position as much as I possibly can without it playing on my mind!!
anyone else got these issues? What on earth is going on!!!!

  • This is the 945 LTE forum, it sounds like you may have a normal 945?  Maybe worth confirming and posting in appropriate place for best chance of appropriate replies.

  • What is the mode you are using? Some multisport mode? The open water swim in multisport activities is really different than the direct normal open water swim for the GPS smoothing and track quality.

  • I use the open water swim activity when stand alone swimming and I use it in the Triathlon mode when racing. But when training I just use the stand alone open water activity setting.

  • Why will this be smoother for one and not the other? Which setting will be the smoothest?

  • Why. I don't know, but that just is the case. Open water swimming used directly uses different smoothing algorithm or than open water swim via Triathlon or Swimrun. And the better is open water swim directly.

eg. This swim part of swimrun: https://www.strava.com/activities/5596030440 vs. This swim with open water swim: https://www.strava.com/activities/5559286393

The watch is trying to work out a pace from accelerometers that are influenced by your body movement. Probably much worse if you are using the watch and not a chest strap such as the HRM-Pro and HRM-Run. Unless I am mistaken both of these enable better pacing information on a treadmill. However, if you want better pacing on a treadmill then you need a footpod.

  • Unsure why but if you use the Open Water Swim as part of a Multisport activity such as Swimrun, triathlon etc, the track goes really crazy although distance and pace aren't usually too bad. It's been like this for a while on the 945 and F6 despite frequent requests to Garmin to do something about it. It appears that the swim track is created using the Run activity hence the craziness and the smoothing algorithm used to guesstimate the swim is not used.
