Forerunner 945 Screen Repair

Good afternoon! Today I damaged my Forerunner 945 that I recently purchased on Facebook Marketplace. The watch was purchased back in December of 2020 but at the moment I’m not sure if it’s still covered under warranty. I literally cracked the glass and scratched the plastic near the glass. Anyone know how much it will cost to repair? Also, if the watch is still under warranty, can they get that info with the serial #? Any help with this would be appreciated.

  • Not sure if warranty applies to 2nd user. Repairs are not easy but possible so perhaps speak to a jeweler. Garmin at best will offer a refurbished watch but might consider a warranty (very unlikely).

    Best to contact Garmin Support.

  • In some geographies warranty can be transferred to the second owner. Garmin Support will be able to tell you if there is warranty left based on the serial number.

But damaged glass is almost certainly not covered. I broke the glass on a Forerunner 935, and the out-of-warranty cost of a exchanging it for a refurbished one was 125 Euro (2.5 years ago). Speaking to a jeweler is a good idea, and perhaps a smartphone repair shop might also be able to advise.

  • So good news! Garmin will be sending me a replacement 945 at a super cheap price.  I’m honestly surprised. I’m guessing they’re feeling generous????? It’s either that or the 955 is right around the corner. I’ll update as soon as the replacement gets to me. Thumbsup tone4

There are more than a few posts praising Garmin Support. No need to be surprised.

  • Got my new 945 today! Looks great and I look forward to using it for running. To be honest though, I’m biased in favor of the Suunto 9 Baro. I’ve dismissed Garmin for a while so I’m hoping it lives up to it’s expectations from all the rave reviews on YouTube. However, some of the problems mentioned on the Forerunner 945 sub forum causes be to be a bit worried. One thing I can say is the Suunto 9 Baro has NEVER failed to deliver after 2 years of use. Hopefully the 945 lives up to its name. Slight smile

  • This former loyal Suunto customer never looked back. Problems mentioned on the forum are not representative of the whole contingent of Garmin users out there. I, for example, talk about any little niggle I have with my watch just because I am nitpicky. And I put every beta software on it as soon as it's available. Enjoy it!

  • What was your last Suunto watch?

  • Original Ambit. It was solid as a rock and looked great (I thought). But I didn't like at all that Moveslink/Movescount was the only way to get data off it. Switched to original Garmin Fenix (looked, well, plain, big, bold and bulky), and was amazed at how versatile and open it was. You could even put your own (small) maps on it. Retrieving files from the it could be done via Bluetooth or USB, Garmin used the ANT+ standard, suddenly there were so many ANT+ sensors available. Probably newer Suuntos do many more things now - but I don't think there is something out there that has the same versatility and relative 'openness' as the FR945 (and Fenix 6 Pro).

  • Don't buy the 945!  The glass edge has no protection and cracks/shatters VERY EASILY.  I've done this 3 different times is common situations, once simply reaching under my car seat for something and just caught the edge of the watch slightly.  It's very easy to do.  I notice other brands and models are designed with the plastic edges around the glass ever so slightly raised so the glass doesn't take such a hit, especially on the edges.  After speaking with Garmin, they wanted to charge me $112 (discounted) service fee to replace the glass with the same type of glass.  I refused to pay anything, the edges will simply shatter again after spending $112.  As an Engineer, this is just poorly designed for such a high end model, and at a minimum be replaced with a stronger glass or provide some kind of additional protection for the glass.  My family and I are all competitive Triathletes and Hikers and will be leaving Garmin for another brand.  I will be selling my expensive inReach GPS and cancelling my monthly global GPS monitoring service with Garmin.
