moving from suunto to garmin, advice me

Hello!

I've used both garmin and suunto over the years. Currently I'm using Suunto but are dissapointed that they moving away from certain kind of features. I was ready to buy a forerunner 955 but now the 945 LTE was released instead. I have no use of LTE so a regular 945 would be great.

However the FR945 is 2 years old.....

What would you do in my situation? Go for a 945 or wait for a 955? Do you think it will be released next year?

  • I have a 945 since November, first 645M for 2 years and before that tomtom spark 2, with the new update the 945 is stable and very efficient, plus it has also dropped in price, in my opinion a great deal.

  • My guess is that somewhere in the next 6 months or so, we will see a top end Garmin watch that combines a number of the technologies that Garmin has introduced separately on individual models - AMOLED screen, LTE, latest generation of HR sensor. Could be a 955, or a Fenix 7.

Given you have a functional Suunto, I'd be tempted to wait the extra months.

  • The things I want from Garmin are mainly spotify, complex interval function, strava segments and the functionality to use structured intervals with my Stryd footpod.

So, 945 would be enough for everything i want.......butbutbut :P

  • the functionality to use structured intervals with my Stryd footpod.

The Stryd workout app will do that. But it's not quite as good as having native running power support on the watch itself. This is perhaps another reason to hold out for the next model.... butbutbut

  • Advantage of the LTE is the smaller size with the updated hardware. The cpu is suppose to be faster and others have told me the GPS is faster to lock on too.

  • I have no need for native power. Im using the stryd footpod.

my suunto 9 have native power

Sorry, I probably wasn't very clear in what I meant. Running Power is not one of the standard data fields on the watch. You can add a custom data field (such as from Stryd, or Garmin's own Running Power), but because it isn't a standard field, you can't set running power alerts, or have power targets in structured workouts. I do use the Stryd app for structured running power workouts, but it is not as neat as if the watch supported running power as a standard data field. The difference between how the watch handles running power, and cycling power is night and day.

I didn't mean "native power" to refer to power being calculated solely from wrist based sensors.

  • ah ok, I see :).

I got a good deal for 945 and did order it. I really need the structured interval functions that Suunto no longer provides. The main reason is that Im a "coach" for a small training group and they love pyramid intervals. :). With my suunto I have to keep the workout in my head and press lap.

Also, it's going to be nice with spotify function as well!

  • Yeah, there are some good deals around on the 945.

The Stryd Workout App will do the structured workouts. Or you can use the standard Garmin ones without power.

  • I also use a Suunto 9 Baro and recently purchased a used Forerunner 945. I personally still think the Suunto 9 Baro is a much better watch, but the Garmin Connect App is really cool. If the Suunto App had half of what’s on the Garmin app I wouldn’t even consider switching.  I decided to try Garmin because I’m not entirely sold on the Suunto 9 Peak. Long story short, I’ll be waiting to see who does what with their next sports watch.
