Improved Fitness Age

In the latest software update the 'improved fitness age' is introduced. After 2 weeks of use, I am already on my achievable fitness age. Question: is it correct that it's limited on 'age minus 9 years' ? If so, why a limiter ?

  • I really don't understand what's wrong with my post (cultural thing ?). I am raising the questions you want me to raise with Garmin, Firstbeat.  This is Garmin forum, no ?

Of course, before my first post I tried to search topics in this area. But not much yet on the 'improved fitness age', which is logical as it was just recently introduced.

But also from the Garmin side there hasn't been a lot of explanation of this new feature.

Up to now, I don't see anybody responding with an 'improved fitness age' lower than 10 years. For comparison, my fitness age according to the 'old' method (VO2 max) is 26 years below my 'improved fitness age'.  That's a huge gap and makes me believe that the improved fitness age is limited on 'age minus 10'.

  • I am raising the questions you want me to raise with Garmin, Firstbeat.  This is Garmin forum, no ?

Yes but Garmin says in the terms that: "We have no duty to monitor any Public Forum.". So if there's no information, we can't give it to you, and you need to ask them from Garmin and then provide us the information, then maybe the next user will get answer from here.

  • I'm not familiar with 'fitness age'; where do you see this number? On the watch or in Connect? If it is in Connect only, chances are that someone on the Connect forum knows.

IMO it could have been made clearer (something like a text in the top banner, a prominent FAQ on the forum home page) that this forum is a user-to-user support forum, so people can set their expectations accordingly.

  • He is a known troll, unable to grasp the concept of a forum.

  • I really don't get the point with the "fitness age". Such a concept is beyond me. When you are, let say, 40, then your age is 40. You may be among the fitness person having 40, but there is no way you have the body and characteristics of a person of 30. It simply does not make sense.

This is a bit like those clothes sized "S" but that truly are "M".

A more interesting figure (also provided in Connect) to satisfy one's ego (or one's appetite to "self-quantifying"), is in which percentage of the population having your age you find yourself according to your VO2.

  • I have 18.8 BMI and a 68 V02max I'm 34 and it says my fitness age is 24. I think it's funny people start a thread on such a silly thing the only thing that matters is your 5K etc times not fitness age not resting heart rate, not v02max only your actual results. I couldn't care less what Garmin thinks my fitness age is or my body battery or how much sleep I had. I know my fitness age when I'm beating all the 18 year olds in races and I know my sleep when I feel tired or not. I know it's a headwind cause I feel it. I know it's hotter and harder I know threshold pace because I know if I can hold it for 30 minutes or not. Body battery is a joke I'm bored of people falling for these gimmicks your body has its own dashboard people wanna stop worrying about their fancy watches and just put the damn miles in 100 a week and eat a raw whole food diet if you want to actually be healthy.

  • true words. the truth is on the streets, be it running or biking. all those numbers are just gimmicks to keep you entertained. and there's no way a fitness watch can really tell your VO2 Max..

  • Well it (VO2max) has been pretty spot on when I've done proper tests.

Also even the absolute value is off, I think the trends will tell are you getting better or not.

So I wouldn't compare it to this "Fitness Age" gimmick :)

  • You may be surprised but for the most part I agree with you. All gimmicks and you shouldn't take them too seriously. On the other hand, why buy a 945, when you are not interest al all in these gimmicks ?

  • My age is correctly recorded in GC as 33.
