GPS not locating since 7.20

GPS takes over an hour to find me during activities since the 7.20 update. I’ve tried soft resets, syncs with Connect/Express, GPS soaks (attempted, at least - it tends to power save before finding satellites) and yesterday, a default settings reset. Still no GPS. It was fine before. My Edge 520 found me in under 5 seconds yesterday morning.
Any ideas about what else I could try? Thanks for any help.

  • Remove the CPE file from the REMOTESW folder.

    Re-sync with Gaermin Express.

Set the Power Save Timeout  to Extended in the activity you want to use.

Leave the watch outside with a clear view of the sky with that activity selected - no need to start it - fro at least 15 minutes

Close out of the activity then open it again and see how long it takes to get the satellites.

If no change contact Garmin Support

  • Thanks Philip. I tried the steps above. The watch didn't pick up satellites after 30 mins, so I tried it again for 45 minutes and it still didn't find them. The Edge found satellites in under 5 seconds in the same location.

I suppose Garmin support is the only thing left to do. Frustrating.

  • As an FYI for anyone else with this problem, I'm also finding the watch has a much faster battery drain since this started. It's like it's constantly doing something or searching for something in the background. I'll post again when I get a response from Garmin.

  • I've had no luck fixing this and yesterday my watch found GPS reception, but only after 75 mins walking outside. Battery drain has been too fast as well. Garmin has offered to exchange my watch so I'll have to send it in.

  • Same issue for me. I actually didn't realise that my watch was updated. But GPS reception has been really poor for a couple of weeks now. It's really slow to locate GPS signal even though CPE is up to date. And during an activity, the GPS signal will drop very often. Never had this issue before.

I have even reset the watch completely, but this has not resolved the issue. Hopefully is a quick firmware fix.

  • My watch has the same issue. It takes forever (30 minutes++) to get the signal, and during the session it looses the signal up to several times.. I also think the battery is draining faste than before..

  • My solution was that Garmin agreed to send me a refurbished replacement 945. That updated to 7.20 the night after I got it and the GPS works. I am finding a faster battery drain than before 7.20 but perhaps that's because the new features require more juice.

  • The battery draining faster is likely due to FW 7.20, see: this thread

  • My 945 is not connecting to GPS any more either. I'm not tech savy enough to know what some of these responses are. I do know that this is a very expensive watch to be having these types of issues

  • Since the 7.20 update what I have noticed is that it takes considerably longer to get a GPS lock.

Previously I'd walk outside my house, select run, and it would take about ~20 seconds to get a GPS lock (green bar across top of watch) and off I would go. Since updating to 7.20 it is taking 60-120 seconds to get a lock. My CPE file is up to date.

Hopefully it will be fixed in future update.
