Track Run calibration issues

I’m finding it impossible to get Track Run working. I have a FR 745, but thought I would ask here since this forum has a bit more activity.

Short version: Has anyone ever gotten Track Run to work on a “double-bend” or “double-radius” track?

This was new to me, but there are four different running track shapes approved by the IAAF. The simplest has straight sides and semi-circle ends. The other types use flatter curves for the ends that are composed of two different radii. The track I run on is a (certified) double-radius track.

According to DC Rainmaker, this shouldn’t be a problem:

> “Garmin says that it takes approximately two laps for them to work out the details of your track. They also say their algorithm can correctly detect any track as long as it has two parallel straightaways, and either a single or double-radius curve at two ends.”

https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2020/09/garmin-forerunner-745-depth-review.html

But I can’t find this mentioned anywhere in official Garmin docs. From Garmin support site:

> “Track Run expects a track with two parallel straightaways and two semi-circular turns of a single radius value”

https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=eH8V1VwjN338uo8C5PgDJ7

If Track Run really only works on single radius tracks, that eliminates a huge percentage of running tracks. So has anyone had luck with a track that they know is double radius?

  • I haven’t but would suggest you contact Garmin Support and see if you can get a sensible answer from them. DCRainmaker is not always correct.

  • Garmin Support did confirm that Track Run expects a single radius track.

I'm not sure what happened between DC Rainmaker's review (at the launch of the Track Run activity) and now, perhaps Garmin realized that the algorithm wasn't quite as robust as they thought.

But to bring closure to this issue (for now): If you're having trouble with Track Run, check the configuration of the track you're running on. It may be a double radius track.
