Is the temperature sensor any good for others?

As I feel it's pretty much off usually and even when swimming in cold water, where one could expect the water get to the sensor.

Like today looked at the swim temperatures: 16, 16, 17, 17, 16, 15, 16, 15 °C (For the US: 59-63)

And now I'm not sure where it's located, as is the location just bad or the sensor itself?

I would expect real temperatures to be couple of degrees less. Of course it kind of isn't much, but getting the real temperatures of the water while swimming would be nice.

Also kind of HW request for future watches, make it better! :)

    I appreciate the apology.  It takes a bigger person to say they may have been wrong then not too.  So, with that.  I swim with a wet suit in the Puget Sound that is the draining…

  • Well, for all its faults, I still dutifully attach my tempe onto my shoe on. each. and. every. run I do.  There are some things they could do better with the little device but it's worth purchasing in my opinion.

  • Well, it arrived today, that's the same housing as the foot pod I once used. Friday probably next swimrun so maybe then first experiences.

    I don't see any holes in it and it's small black thing. Direct sun light will probably give much too high readings.

    Most probably first try putting the watches strap trough the Tempe tray(?) and snapping Tempe over it, seems pretty ok and should be close enough for the signal to work under water.

    Does it ever.  I had a vigorous debate on here some time ago with a guy that claimed that the fact the unit is black didn't matter much in the readings but I still think it does.  At least you can install it in a location not quite as exposed to the sun, or like I do, dab some white paint on top and/or put it under a little white fabric housing.

  • Yeah, well mine main focus is the water temperatures when swimming and in that the black color doesn't probably much matter, but then in the running, it's on the wrist, it's black an will probably give too high, but interesting to see and play with it.

  • Probably from my experience with the same-housed footpod, I wear my Tempe on my shoe.  I've toyed with a few other locations (on the strap of a Scosche HRM and the strap of the watch) but the shoe seems to have the least bleedover from body temperature.

  • Yes, it's probably good place for it while doing some activity outside water as that's what the housing is designed for, but in water I would guess no reading as it's over 10cm from my hand in all the time.

  • Interested to hear if you'll get a reading in that location in the water, or if it will occasionally get a signal through just when the wrist is out of the water.

  • Well putting the watch near HRM-Swim will give readings under the water, so attaching Tempe to watch strap should be close enough, but we'll see :) But yes, at least when doing strokes it should get it and then it also comes to that, how does the in/out/in/out of water affect the reading, but then I can't think of a place if my watch is on my wrist where I could put Tempe so that it would be under water and at least sometimes very near the watch, but then that how often will it send signal, how hard would it happen to be in the moment when it's near of it. Maybe hydration pack on the chest could be one place to try hand goes pretty close and that would be under water for the whole swim. Much questions and ideas, but I'll have the short summer for time to play and experiment so maybe I'm smarter in some months time is Tempe any good in my wanted use case.

  • One thing to consider is that acclimation period I described in my earlier post.  It often takes many minutes for my Tempe to adjust to the actual outside temperature vs what it reads in my car for example.  That phenomenon will be even more pronounced in a swimming pool but you'll clearly see the graph dive (sorry for the pun) down to the actual temperature by the end of the swim.

  • Yep, the internal sensor does the same. Would be interesting to know if it's the sensor or algorithm smoothing big changes.
