Garmin Forerunner 945 Revision D sticky and double click buttons

Hi All,

I have just bought a Forerunner 945 3 days ago and am starting to get soft buttons and the start/stop has a slight double click that is annoying me. I have heard this issue was fixed in Revision D but after 3 days im still getting the same issue.

I'm a swimmer, and don't press the buttons under water as the manual states.

Is there any fix for this issue? all the forums are 2+ years old with old revisions?

Thanks

  • I have heard this issue was fixed in Revision D

That's a forum myth.  The revision has nothing to do with the issue. My husband and I both have Revision A that we've had since week 1 when the 945 was released 25 months ago. No problems. You're not the first to say Revision D has the issue either.  If it's not working properly after 3 days then exchange it.

  • They do still work, but for a $900aud watch you'd want the build quality to be good

  • Same issue here with a new replacement watch Garmin sent me weeks ago. Drives me crazy when people here say “do the buttons work?”. It’s like they don’t care about quality… which is why they bought Garmin products in the first place I guess… As for me, never again.

  • Do the buttons work - yes/no? objective response.

How do they feel? I think they feel mushy. I think they feel fine. I don't like the clicky feel. I like the clicky feel. Subjective response.

  • you can't really use that argument to say this is how they are meant to be, if you buy a product and they are clicky and responsive and as you use it they dont feel as responsive that clearly shows the product is degrading in quality, its not "working as intended" otherwise they would have made then soft to begin with

  • Yeah, I have a rev D bought Thanskgiving 2019, and the only button that I get a good response from is the start/stop and back buttons (the two on the right side of the watch).  The up/down buttons suck, and I have to jam them to get them to work.  I had a 935 with this same issue.  I don't know why it's so effing hard for Garmin to just use quality button mechanisms; I've had cheaper Garmins that have been fine (235, 645).  I also had a fenix 5 plus that was fine.  Something with that 935/945 chassis just apparently either lets crap into the button mechanisms, or the mechanisms themselves are just garbage.  Here's to hoping whatever replaces these watches has a solid redesign.  I'd be curious if the 745 has crap buttons too.

    Nor can we use yours.

Not necessarily. Due to the materials used such as springs and silicone rubber, there may be a "breaking in" period that is perfectly normal.  Springs will loose some tension once in use. Silicone rubber can expand or shrink 1% for every 10° C change in temperature.  That doesn't seem like much at all, but it makes a difference on a rubber silicone seal that's designed to be water resistant. So, if the buttons aren't performing their designed function, they get stuck or if you physically have to press hard to get them to work, by all means, return it. If it works, but just doesn't feel the way you want it too, that doesn't mean it's a defect. My two year old watch doesn't have that brand new click as it did when I first bought it, but I never had a button fail me either.

  • In my experience, keeping the watch clean and regularly activate the buttons under water/in the shower helps (but doesn’t solve the problem)…
