Lap Alert in Open Water not working

The lap alerts in my Garmin 945 for Open Water (OW) swimming have not working for a year or so. I hoped a software update would solve the issue, but it hasn't. I am currently in the latest OS (7.10), and the problem is continuing.

Here's what happens: When I go to OW Settings/Auto Lap, I change the primary and secondary lap alert settings from the default (both are in "timer") to lap time and lap pace. However, when I check preview, all I get is a dark screen- this happens even if I haven't changed the lap alert settings. And I only get this black screen whenever I have a lap during my OW swim, whether it is a manual or auto lap. Interestingly enough, when I go my ios Connect app after my swim, I see that my laps have been recorded, both in manual and auto lap mode. So essentially, my Garmin is recording the laps, just not showing them during my swim- which is really not very helpful, as I am trying to figure out whether I can keep up my pace in all the laps. Interestingly, my lap alert settings are not saved, either- I find that they are reverted to timer in a couple of minutes or so- a few times they changed to calories instead, I have no idea why- maybe Garmin thinks I need to lose weight:):):)

BTW, I haven't been to a pool in a long time, so I am not sure if my Garmin has this problem in pool swims as well. And to my knowledge, this is the only problem in my 945. I don't use many functions; I mainly swim, run, hike and do some cardio, and those, as well as other functions, are working perfectly. Too bad one of the few I really really need is not:( I'd really appreciate any help regarding this, as I did not even encounter anyone with the same problem in my google searches.

  • Hi Emre, thank you for the clear steps that you follow to reproduce that issue. I can't reproduce it on my watch; if you go to Open Water Swim settings, then scroll down until you see restore defaults does resetting the profile resolve the issue? If not could you upload a picture of what you are seeing, and I can put a report together for you.

  • Before resetting your ows sport, make a backup  of it via USB. If a reset doesn’t help, you can put it in the newfiles folder and your datafields are restored.

  • Hi, thnx for the reply. But I ama bit sure how to do that. Is there a link with instructions on that?

  • Having the same issue all of a sudden during my open water swims with my Forerunner 945. Blank screen where before I would get like a 3 second total/ summary of the lap. Did you manage to get this resolved?

  • Unfortunately, I did not:( I sent an email to Garmin Support as well, but the response was not helpful at all, so I gave up. So, I would appreciate if you could post here if could resolve it. I swim mostly in OW, and I used to do intervals a lot; I lost the feature I used most on my 945:(

  • Yes it’s annoying. I think what triggered the bug for me is when I changed one of my data fields (and changing it back doesn’t fix the issue). It was working fine before up until about a week ago. Will let you know in case I do manage to resolve it.

  • If that is the case (I have no idea when mine went berserk), you may try Garmin-Brooks' suggestion above: "if you go to Open Water Swim settings, then scroll down until you see restore defaults does resetting the profile resolve the issue?" I didn't bother with that, but maybe it is as simple as that?

  • Hey! Sorry forgot to ever get back to you. That “Restore Defaults” did the trick for me! And no I didn’t lose any data or anything like that. Only had to change the data fields back to my personal preferences again which took maybe 2 minutes. So thanks for that suggestion - hope it works for you too!
