7.10 activity calories counting

- Added metabolic calories into the total calories reported in the calories data field and recorded in the activity file.

In 7.10 changelog i saw this line. Today i noticed in my home trainer training that my calories counting was higher than usual. I have 1254 calories burned for 1:51:50 at 164W average and 1102 kJ. Usually, Work and calories burned are around the same number but i can see that there are around 150 calories added.

My metabolic calories are configured at 2000 calories per day so around 83 calories per hour so around 150 calories for 1:51:50.

So it works as advertised in the changelog but if you're tracking calories intake with MyFitnessPal for example, i see my 2000 "inactive" calories + 1254 calories burned by my activity. So that means that the metabolic calories burned while training are actually counted twice.

I don't understand why this change was made. Is anyone else who already has had the update experience the same issue ?

  • They are not counted twice.

Before it was subtracting out metabolic calories even though apparently by adding them they are saying they weren't part of the exercise calorie number.

In MFP it gives you full credit for the exercise, but BMR calories are subtracted out of the other/main adjustment. In reality it just acts like you didn't exist for an hour while exercising. You can see this if you do very long activities as the main adjustment goes negative, which it wouldn't if you got double credit.

The catch. Not saying that leads to an IRL more accurate overall number. In fact I think that the reason Garmin is generally more conservative/accurate than other watches (which exaggerate) may be this. So it may overestimate now.

You can see total, active, and resting calories in Garmin. Active should be less than the exercise. Simply take your total calories in Garmin connect, subtract any MFP deficit, and verify that is how much MFP gives you to eat.

  • Thanks !

I checked in MFP, i had to activate negative calories adjustments or else it only added the 1254 calories burned for the activity and Garmin calories adjustment was at 0.

It doesn't seem to correct the amount for yesterday or maybe i have to wait for a sync. I'll see if it's correct now for my next activities.
